Last Tuesday I uploaded my first game to FGL. The staff were quite kind about it and it's been "in bidding" since Thursday.

So far I've received a bid so miserly that I could probably raise more money by walking down the road picking up pennies for an hour.

I'm trying out their "First Impressions" option now, where you pay $5 for five reviews from trusted FGL members. Hopefully I'll learn how to improve the game from them.

Let's see how it goes!

First Impressions come from random people outside of FGL.  If you want other developers to review your game then put a link to your game in your FGL forum signature and make a bunch of review posts on other developers' games.

Yeah I've found first impressions are not very helpful and often ignorant. Don't waste your money on first impressions. You can actually buy more admin reviews. Those would be better. Or you could do what rob says.

Ha! Yeah, you guys are absolutely right! Just got my first review and I was a bit disappointed.

I was basically told "make it a little more like Mario Brothers" and "Maybe brighter colors and 3D"!

Yeah, thanks bro! That was $1 dollar well spent!

Might look into getting some admin reviews once the current batch are used up.

Yeah you should.

Here are some of the reviews I got for Mr and Mrs Tart Keep in mind that this game is a Puzzle Platformer.

"Score 1: i didn't like the music i just want to hear sound if i lost"

"Score 4: i would like if there is time limit so that you have to complete the level befor time ends"

"Score 7:i don'tlike that you have the control and letter keys to play the game"

"Score 5: the graphics are for kids game i would like to see more alive characters"
I did get a few "Awesome" reviews but they weren't all that helpful either.

I
n the end I'll never use First Impressions again. I'll stick to developer, FGL admin, and Sponsor reviews.

To be honest, I'd like to recieve reviews how I write them. For example, here is a long pre-review I wrote for a game, making notes as I played them:

Quote
This time I continued playing.

I noticed a one pixel change on the title screen on the left (the box).

Clicked play and noticed my progress was deleted; it doesn't matter much, I didn't get far last time...

Tested failing the first room (get off of sofa).

Failed.

Completed it and the tried walking into walls, I don't really like the effect at the moment, maybe only show the animation if you aren't touching a wall.

Went down the elevator.

Failed the word round, strange it can exit the room when you can't.

Restarted word round.

Spontaineously decided to exit room and noticed light was actually on. (possibly due to me touching the lightbulb that was off.

Entered spike room and decided not to risk dying so just completed it.

Entered tie room and got confused.

Left tie room.

Entered sock room.

Collected 1 sock.

Tried spamming keys.

Collected a second sock.

Time ran out.

Collected two other socks.

Left room

Re-entered.

Collected three socks in given time.

Restarted.

Collected all 4 socks.

Got lightbulb.

Entered tie room.

Got confused.

Left tie room.

Entered sock room.

Viewed computer screen.

Noted colour picker.

Tried to pick it up.

Failed.

Left room, intruiged.

Re-entered sock room, determined.

Couldn't make sense of it.

Left.

Entered tie room

Left again after seeing no change.

Realised there wasn't any pausing.

Took a short break to think about the puzzle anyway.

Returned, break was around 5 mins.

Managed to pick up colour picker this time even though I had tried last time.

Entered tie room.

Used colour picker on girl; don't particularly like the box it comes up with.

Use it on all ties and notice there are two turquoises.

Notice that tiffany blue is the only non-capitalised one.

See lightbulb.

Decide to exit room without it.

Re-enter and complete it again.

Get lightbulb

Exit room

Lose colour picker during descent of elevator.

Notice platform hasn't completely lined up with level.

Enter far left room.

Jump around and chat.

Take note of locked door.

Exit room.

Enter middle room.

Deem jump impossible until a box is acquired.

Leave.

Enter right room

Find remote and sleeping pills.

Leave room.

Surprised I still have them.

Change channel in first room, have a feeling I'm going to be spiking a drink.

Can't work out how to select sleeping pills.

Read description

Leave room.

Enter rightmost room.

Leave

Enter 'bar' room.

Make guy go to toilet

Spam keys trying to select sleeping pills.

Pick up an unidentifyable object.

Leave room.

Enter middle room and realise I can go left off the screen.

Think this is delibrate.

Wasn't able to find anything.

Leave.

Find out how to select items using number keys.

Spike guys drink.

Realise I can collect unlimited drinks (unidentifyable object) by entering and exiting scene.

Go into bathroom and get lightbulb.

Pick up guy.

Realise the lightbulb hasn't shown.

Enter bedroom, the guy is probably what she wants.

Actually realise it is 1 + 2 to scroll between items.

Give woman guy.

Get lightbulb but it doesn't show

Drink in middle room and get lightbulb.

Stop playing.

Presume this is why it is 30%

Even if it wasn't anyway as long as that I would still appreciate that style as imo it really helps.

Im not sure about them being a big waste of time, they can really help you in the developmental stages of your game.  They may be discouraging once you have nearly completed your game, or give you a false sense about your game, but once you get closer to finishing your game FGL offers pre-reviews and RVI's to get that last bit of feedback you may need.  I would also be active in the community too, not completely relying on FI feedback but the feedback from your peers.

Sometimes they help (often by those who have more than 50 reviews on their plate) but most times it seems like little kids review them.
