Paid job: Simple game

Hi everyone! I just posted this as a project on a freelancer-site, but then I discovered this page.

Before I explain what I want: I have read this thread: http://community.stencyl.com/index.php/topic,11559.0.html
, and I do realize you're not game making machines.

-----
I need a simple flash game that works as an app/game on Facebook where people can post and share scores.

The game idea is simple:
- One screen
- One moveable character (stick figure)
- The character/player runs for a little bit, avoiding falling blocks/dangers from the sky, then jumps
- If the player is hit by the falling dangers, the speed of the character is reduced and thus the character won't be able to jump as far.
- The player can land in three different zones. The closest gives 10 points, the middle on 20 points and the last one 30 points. If a player is not hit by the dangers to begin with, he'll be able to jump to the 30 point zone. But only if he isn't hit.

I've attached a sketch of the game. I need this game completed and ready before 16.august.
-----

As I understand this one-fixed-screen game should be fairly easy to make. So I ask: how much would one of you charge for this project?

The problem will be sharing scores on facebook. That's pretty hard with stencyl, to the best of my knowledge. The rest should be simple enough. How much are you offering for this?

He stated at the end of his post that he was asking for an estimate for what the charge would be.

Implementing scores would indeed be the tricky part, but if the programmer has even a basic understanding of AS3 (or you do), it isn't too bad to implement most APIs.

As for a cost estimate, I did a similar basic game for $300 + 20% revenue for an iOS game. If it is really kept at a basic level (with graphics and music supplied), can probably get by with $200.

One thing to realize is the time involved in making a flash game. You are basically hiring a contractor. While $200 might seem like a lot at first, realize that if it even takes only 10 hours (someone who is skilled with Stencyl might pull it off in that short of time), that's $20 an hour. In my experience though, games quickly double in length as new ideas are implemented and old ideas are scrapped, or multiple APIs are involved... the list goes on. Thus, a game like that, while it might take 10 hours on the surface, ends up being maybe 20 hours, which is $10 per hour.

Yes, I did ask how much you would charge.

The game will not earn anything. It's for a student organization trying to make a point clear for some politicians. I also understand that integrating a game with facebook shouldn't be very difficult if you have some knowledge of php.

Thanks for your answers so far. Does anyone else have an estimate?

Then in response to my response, he said the following.

I doubt many of us know any php, but good luck finding someone who does. I bet a few of us do, not me though. :P But then sharing stats through a stencyl game would probably require a little modification of the Electrotank Multiplayer kit.

I typed this post already... for some reason it wouldn't post it?

My advice: Make it yourself. I have a set of tutorials on Kongregate for how to make a platformer in Stencyl for beginners/intermediates:

I appreciate you taking your time to find resources for me, but I don't have the time to learn before this campaign starts.

The best offer (NOT the cheapest) I've received so far is £200.

I don't know anything about making a Facebook app, but I hope whoever does this game for you (assuming it's a Stencyl developer) will do a write-up on how to integrate Stencyl games with Facebook.

I know PHP, but I still don't think I could hook it up to facebook API :/ Othgerwise I'd give it a shot.

Stian, just out of curiosity, did you read the comments on your link about FB? The later comments all say that the coding is now outdated and doesn't work (and those comments were back in 2011, so it's likely even worse now). If you can find an up-to-date version, then you can likely get more interest. Many here have limited experience with "real" programming languages, such as using AS3 and PHP together. Even my knowledge was stretched by trying to follow the tutorial, and I have some experience in both. Knowing that the coding has changed nowadays means I personally wouldn't be able to implement the FB API without an up-to-date tutorial.

No, I didn't check the comments. Maybe I'll look into stencyl myself after this campaign, and if I do I'll do a tutorial on how to connect a stencyl-game to facebook.

Hi!
I'm currently working on integrating a Stencyl game with Facebook, and I wouldn't call it exactly easy. ;)

First of all the documentation is rather bad, and the Facebook API changes rapidly (how rapidly? Every month they introduce breaking changes, announced only 90-days before they go live. That's just crazy, IMO) As a result most examples you will find on the internet are most likey outdated and not working.

There is a facebook-actionscript-api, but guess what, the word seems to be that it's poorly maintained and outdated.

To communicate with the Facebook, I would recommend to use the official Javascript SDK, and to communicate between JS and AS3 you can use the ExternalInterface class. That's what the facebook-actionscript-api does as well internally.

I cannot give you a complete guide on how to integrate a game on Facebook, because I don't have so much time now, but if you have questions about it, feel free to ask.
