"Could not load game. Resource listing is possibly corrupt..."

The error message tells me to zip my game and post to the forum, but apparently the game is over the attachment size limit.  So I'll try to split it up to multiple zips.

I'm quite distraught.  This game was 99.5% complete.  Now suddenly it won't load.

Hopefully there's some way to fix it or rewind to a previous save state or something.  Wish I could give a clue as to what went wrong.  I was just assigning behaviors to actors (had maybe 12 tabs open at once in the Stencyl program), and then suddenly it quits out.  Upon restarting, I can't get my game open again.

Zip is attached. Blocky's Beat Quest. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Here's the 2nd zip (and the 3rd too, which is just the few main directory files).

Lastly, I tried to follow the DIY instructions, but I'm not up to the task.

Opened up the resources.xml file in my text editor, and - judging by what was written in the "Is StencylWorks freezing" post - I was expecting to see some huge wall of text.  Instead, all that's there is this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<resources>
<pack id="1" name="default"/>
</resources>

Should that resources.xml file be filled with different instructions on how to handle all the different game resources in that folder?  If so - is there any way to get it back?  :(

More files.  Sorry for the overload.  I'd rather just give it all up front than make someone ask for it.  Here are my log files.

You don't really know me that well yet, but once you do, you'll come to learn that I'm the kind of guy who has absolutely zero problems replying to his own thread five or ten times in a row.  I spend most of my day talking to myself anyway, so this is no different...

Anyway, I wanted to come in here to say that I did a littl emore snooping around, and though I haven't been able to fix anything, I did want to note that just yesterday I downloaded a new font pack (the one with the Air Force stencil in it), tried it out, didn't find anything I wanted, then removed it from my StecylWorks program.  The crash & 'cannot load' error message came a few hours later.

I was looking through the other threads here where people had the same problem, and I saw a lot of references to erros happening around fonts.  If someone could look at the log file (in post #4) or check resources.xml (which is in the 3rd zip that I originally posted at top), I have a feeling the error has something to do with that same font issue.

I wuv u guyz!

Welcome. As far as the font is concerned, I downloaded the 3 newest one from Forge (Tele, 28 days, Palatino) make modification to each one and used each one separately and they are all fine.

The problem with resource listing error was found in the previous version of SW and has subsequently been fixed. Have you done an update yet?

If possible, can you remove all your fonts, check to see if game can be opened up? If so, make sure you use latest SW version and redownload the fonts. Thanks.

Thanks.

Apparently I'm already using the latest update: 1.0.1 (b401)

I just went and moved all .ttf and .fnt files from the resources folder to a different temp location.

But still getting the same error.  "Could not load game. Resource listing is possibly corrupt."

Do you know if that "resources.xml" file is supposed to have more than just that one tiny little block of text in there? I have a feeling it's supposed to be this massive wall of text, and that this could be a big problem...

Rob, the resource listing error that has been fixed is a completely different issue than what OpenHeartSound is experiencing.

From what I understand, the resource error he is encountering has to do with one of his xml files being corrupt or incomplete, though, I'm not sure if it is always a specific one like data.xml or game.xml, or if it varies from case to case.

Edit: yeah resources.xml contains very little info from what I can tell.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out the best way to determine what in the files is missing or corrupt. I imagine what is happening is somewhere in one of the xml files, something is being referenced, but according to another file, that item does not exist, which would trigger the error, but that is just my hypotheses.

I just took a look at a few different game's resource.xml files and they're all like yours. Short.
So, maybe it's not that?

Maybe your thinking of the data.xml file in the "resources" folder. That one can get to be pretty large.

Thanks for the info. I thought openheartsound mentioned that he downloaded some font and used it which triggered the problem.

@openheartsound you mentioned you downloaded "(the one with the Air Force stencil in it)", can you also be more specific. What's the name of the font you download before it crashes?

I did mention the font, and no I'm not thinking of any other .xml files.  I'm a total noob and am just taking wild stabs in the dark based on info I've read on the forums.  I should keep my mouth shut because I think I'm just throwing people off the scent.

I appreciate the help, but fear the game might be unrecoverable.  Thankfully I had taken a backup of my drive on Sunday afternoon, so I just realized that at the very worst, I should be able to revert to where I was then.  I put in a lot of time into the game yesterday, but I'm sure you guys lose a day's worth of programming all the time.  Probably like some secret rookie hazing auto-delete thing that comes packaged with Stencyl to give first-time users the real programmer's experience.

It was the "28 days later" font pack - including I think four different fonts - that was uploaded by brantsmith yesterday.

But I downloaded, tested one font, decided I didn't like it, and that was that.   The error happened a few hours after, and the only reason I even thought of it at all was because I saw font issues caused crashes when looking through old posts.

I didn't mention either that this was one of those embarrassing program-froze-so-I-force-quit-and-now-it-won't-work situations.

Thanks. I tested the 28 days fonts with modification and it worked fine here. Anyways, I understand you saved your work and hopefully it's not a big loss.

Make sure you do more saving until you get a hang of things. I do that all the time just to be safe.

Any chance we get a sneak peek of your work?

@Epic, thanks for chiming in, I understand support load is huge for you and the team.

Aw thanks for asking!   It's highly unimpressive - and it's even less impressive now because all the work that I did yesterday were the things like graphics, and having text pop up on the screen with song info when find a new coin, etc.

I also lost the menu/intro screen and the control room screen at the end where you can go through and select the different tracks that you found.  So in this version you just reach the last sign and that's it.  Nothin happens.

But thankfully the basic architecture and layout are still there (though there are still some places where you can cheat around walls, etc).  All that's really missing are the extras.

I didn't originally come here looking to make a "game," but that's what's happening.  My motivation is more to try to make a sort of "playable audio portfolio" to help me find more work doing composition and sound design with indie devs.

So please try to keep in mind when you're playing that the real focus is supposed to be on the audio and on gathering the eight coins as you move through the level.  Each one will advance the playlist to the next song.  It's not supposed to be a hard or challenging "game".  It's supposed to be a short little adventure that moves from one tune to the next pretty quickly without the player getting too bored.  And then at the end you get to go to a screen where you can re-listen to each song in it's entirety and find a link to my site.  (Openheartsound.com. That's openheartsound.com.  H T T P colon backslash backslash W W W dot Open Heart Sound dot com. Call now operators are standing by).

Anyway, it's Blocky's Beat Quest.  Game link is here:
