A good place to start in making your art look more professional is to learn about the tools available to you. Have you tried Paint Tool Sai? What about Gimp?
They both have some really cool features for creating and editing images that you could find useful.

I tried gimp and it is pretty good but stencyl wont use images made with it, It only will use images made with pencyl, Paint.NET and  MSpaint.

then you didn't use the right file extension. Try saving it in gimp as png or jpeg!

You should try this website here:

The tutorial(s) are/is beautiful, good section on what makes pixelart good and how to 'cover up the grid'. Helped me a lot to move away from the circle and line tools. pixelart (in my opinion) is good because of the control you have over the image, and also the size of the image.

For Gimp 2.8, you have to Export to png instead of saving as a png.

If you're going to practice pixel art, you should probably draw images smaller than the size of the entire game window :P (unless you're making a background, of course).
