"Could Not Open Game" Bug.

Stencyl was slowing down on me, so I closed it and opened it back up. (I've done it before with no problems).

But when I went to open my game, it said "Could Not Open File, ZIP it up and post it on the forums."

This post - http://community.stencyl.com/index.php/topic,1191.0.html - said to edit the data.xml file. I would totally do it myself, but I have no idea what's needed to do so.

Any help? The ZIP'd game file is attatched to the post.

Nevermind.

Didn't solve it, no. I'm just done with Stencyl.

I've worked in Flash ActionScript 2.0 for over 3 years, and I was glad to find a program that could make simple games easy to make.

But I'm not going to bother with a program that requires me to work around program errors by placing my trust and patience in an unresponsive community.

It's only been two days. :o We're just volunteers here, and we sometimes miss stuff. If you need immediate help, you're generally better off checking out IRC.

Did you attempt to edit the XML file?

Alright lets see here...
your game.xml is corrupt.
apperently, you have no scenes.
and plus, your resorces.xml does not end in </pack> and all others do.

Hey, you should be quiet. I've had the same problem (it got fixed) and waited for almost 2 weeks and you waited like 3 days? Wow. Just wait! We are working on it right now.

Hehehehe.....

I'm sorry. I tend to get impatient easily - I just really wanted to finish this game. Plus, I seem to have the most unnatural lack of luck in forums, so I assumed everyone just ignored me, and the trend was just continuing.

Well, I'm at least glad now that despite giving up myself, that people are still willing to help. Anyways...

Did you attempt to edit the XML file?

No, I haven't been able to. I dont know what tools/programs are required to edit one.

Whoa. 2 weeks... D:
But... thanks, anyway :)

Seems like you are only one of few unlucky users left that still cannot open a game. The other uses another OS (window xp 32bit) and found no problems any more.

What's your platform?

Can anyone from team unzip the game.xml at start of this thread and look at it in more details? I would also like to know what's need to be inside and what will constitute a bug.

Can you also post a zip of your logs?  That way we can track down the bug that is causing this.

We really need the logs to be able to track this down. The game is a start, but it doesn't tell us what happened before the error cropped up.

We're fully aware that the issue is happening, but *nobody* on the team is able to reproduce it, which has made it all but possible to debug, let alone fix. We're leaning entirely on reports like these to track it down.

As Joe has said, the Stencyl Team is almost entirely volunteers, and we're in a slump right now due to a perfect storm of our volunteers being out for personal reasons. Our community is still too brand new for non-team members to be providing help on our behalf.

I understand your concerns but just want to let you know, candidly, that we're not a big company, let alone a small one. It's literally a solo founder and lots of volunteers. I'm working to change that, but it takes time.

But I am trying to help! And I am not part of the team. I am helping because this has happened to me, and now I know the general way to fix it (unless it has to deal with the data.xml coding O.o)

Fixing it is a good start. But helping us address the underlying problem is better, so said fixes no longer need to be done. :)

[sorry for late reply]

In the heat of my rage, I uninstalled the program. So, I'll have to get around to re-installing it. I can still produce the logs by attempting to open the file again, right?

If you still run into any problems, please include the following in your post:

1. Your systems and os (like win 32 xp)
2. Post log from Debug > Generate Logs
3. Game zip file

Thanks.

I'm running on Mac OSX. 32 bit.

I'll have the logs soon.

And the zipped game file is already posted in the first post.

Can you also swap in the latest version of sw.jar to your stencylworks folder and regenerate log?
(Use Debug > Generate Logs to generate log). Only new sw.jar is needed.

It has more debugging messages to allow us to pinpoint the potential cause of the problem.

Latest sw.jar at:
