hello all,

i know there are a few threads already open about pixel art and programs to use but i was wondering whether any of you guys might be able to help with a recent problem i have, trying to find a good alternative to ms paint for mac!

i've been recovering from an operation recently which has meant i've been and will continue to be on long term sick leave, so trying to use this as an opportunity to forge on and get cracking with my own game, still plugging away at the graphics. i recently purchased a macbook pro for my music, both live and in my studio, er i mean bedroom! ;) and it kicks ass for everything... well almost everything, i'm still looking to find a replacement for ms paint. i know that might sound a bit ridiculous, but ms paint was perfect for my 8 bit style sprite design and i can't seem to find an alternative for mac that has the same or similar functionality. i've tried loads of different programs and even tried to use a wine wrapper to use with ms paint on my mac but can't seem to get this to work. it seems ridiculous that i've got a top spec macbook pro but am having to borrow my parents bust up old windows laptop to do my sprite work on! ah well i'll muddle through, sorry for the rant!

paintbrush: first of all i tried out paintbrush, which seemed just about perfect... until i realised that the copy and paste function when using the select tool only sometimes works, and never seems to work when you're zoomed, which i'm almost invariably am. renders the app as useless for me :(

seashore: seemed great with all the functions i required, was a bit buggy and crashy, but found another version of it called tpainter. however, after having worked with it for a while, i realised that the app lightens the file every time you open it, changing the colours. i only noticed this when i referred back to some of my older sprite sheets and realised the colours didn't match up, d'oh! haven't found a way round this problem yet.

i've tried many other paint style apps via the mac app store but all the ones i've tried seem to have issues that i can't really work around :( the best i've found so far is acorn.

if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, ta! the best plan i've got so far is buying a bust up old windows laptop to use ms paint :p

peace,

I use gimp, because it is mac friendly, great  for pixel art and free. It has loads of tools and is easy to use. You can't find it on the app store but instead from their website as a .dmg
Need music, graphics, scripts? Just ask!

Adobe recently released their Creative Suite 2 for "free" (incl. Photoshop):

But like The8BitMan, I also prefer GIMP:

Get 100 Chambers for Android / iOS
Get Cubus Velox for Android / iOS or play it on Flash

For the record, they've specified a few times that those downloads are only intended for people who already purchased CS2.

ta guys i appreciate the advice. i had used gimp once or twice in the past actually but initially thought it was too complex for doing my silly little 8 bit sprites. having spent a bit of time with it and considering all the options gimp seems to be the way to go and i'm back to happily making little block characters... on my top spec macbook :)

sorry for getting my knickers in a twist, i've calmed down now! thanks for the advice everyone!

Hi
Just curios about your avatar. What is it? As I look to it, a 'raptor holding a rocket'? XP

@ blightxp oh, oh dear maybe my little 8 bit pixel art isn't quite as good as i thought it was, d'oh! um no my avatar is supposed to be a 'heli-pack man' you know like a little guy with a propeller and engine on his back, holding a bomb, wearing a helmet wiht his legs dangling down behind him, if you can see that now maybe? i've attached a png of the graphics i've done so far, hopefully you'll get the early 8 bit final fantasy style i'm going go for with these sprites. roughly about half way through, having done the frames for most of the unit types, still need to do player and non player characters and still some map tiles left to do :p hopefully if you zoom in they won't all look like deformed raptors! ;)

@vextrex71 yeah i did try the demo of pixelmator, seemed quite cool but i found copying and pasting quite laborious and gimp is free and seems a bit easier for my tiny mind to get to grips with... :)

ta :) only the last few units were with gimp, the rest with ms paint, hence the topic! i'm getting pretty comfortable with gimp now so hopefully i'll speed up and get all my graphics finished soon!
