Ludum Dare (from Latin "to give a game",[1] also known as LD48) is an accelerated video game development competition. It was founded by Geoff Howland and was first held in April 2002. Participants are required to create a videogame in two days,[2] which fits within a given theme.[3] A unique feature of this competition is that participants often release time-lapse videos of their games being made.[4]

Participants are given 48 hours to create a game from scratch fitting a theme announced at the start of the contest. All of the code and content must be created during the 48 hours,[5] each entry must be created by a single person and source code must be shown. After the competition ends, participants are given three weeks to play and rate games created by their peers. There are no physical or cash prizes but participants retain full ownership of their entries.

Since Ludum Dare 18, which occurred in August 2010, a more relaxed version called the "Jam" was introduced. The Jam takes place concurrently with the main competition and allows teams, unshared code, and an extended deadline of 72 hours.[6]

A smaller competition called "Mini Ludum Dare" is held monthly by veteran participants. The rules are generally the same as the main Ludum Dare, but the 48 hour limitation is generally ignored favoring the participation of late developers.

Here is my final round of voting:

I'll explain.

1. 10 Seconds - Okay so nothing special here, but also nothing that I immediately dislike. I'm thinking of some speed game where you have to complete each section in 10 seconds or less (you don't say). +0

2. Alchemy - On reflection I feel that I should have voted this one down but when I was first looking at it what came to my mind were great games where you utilise alchemy to power up your character in an RPG type game, not realising it was way too ambtious. If this comes up what I will probably end up doing is one of those 'unlock all the elements games' where you have to mix different elements to get different results. +0

3. Alternative reality - I down voted this because I prefer 'parallel worlds'. I also don't like the vagueness of it. It will make me spend more time planning the game than I want to. -1

4. Connections - Seems interesting enough but I'm not actually sure what type of game I were to make if this was to come up (not even a vague idea). This may add to the planning stages but I do like the idea which is why it isn't a -1. +0

5. Corruption - Uggh... Boring! I would be extremely bored if this were to come up. Reminds me of politics and I definitely would not like the topic to be this. -1

6. Darkness - I actually upvoted this on the first poll but on reflection I feel that the idea for a game I have, enveryody will have and therefore make it a worse game. Considering this, I don't want it to be the theme. -1

7. Death is Useful - Before the ludum dare I had an idea for a game like this and I know what type of game I will make if it comes up. +1

8. Evil vs Evil - No thankyou. How did this even get in the top 20? It just reminds me of bad games and bad themes. -1

9. Glitch - If this were to be the theme I feel that we would have lots of original ideas. It is better than deception and is my favourite of the topics there even though I don't already have a chosen game type. +1

10. Hunted - Seems interesting but I don't really have any strong opinions on this one. +0

11. Lifecycle - Reminds me of boring plant related games but if it were to come up I may make an evolution type game where you live the life of each person and it controls how you evolve over time. -1

12. Machines - Yes, I know this isn't the most original of ideas but for this it would be very easy to make 'nice' graphics. +1

13. Multi Layered World - Although a nice idea, I just feel that with the time limit it wouldn't work, especially if you are going to be doing really intricate design, it would have been +1 if it was a 2 week compo. -1

14. Parallel worlds - I prefer it to 'Alternative Reality' but I still feel it isn't original enough. +0

15. Replication - Cloning is nice but I don't want to piled up with this on a game jam, my imagination for it is too great however I do now feel that I should have given it a +0. -1

16. Space - There are too many space games already. I don't feel that I could get another original idea in. -1

17. Strange Power Ups - Sounds a bit childish to me, not something that I can work well with. -1

18. Surveillance - I have a great idea but I am keeping it secret. +1

19. Survival -Again, no strong opinion, not something I personally would choose but then again I feel that I could work with it. +0

20. You must leave it behind I have ideas going around my head but I'm not sure if they are original, I may just have to go with something completely random. I should have just voted it +0. +1

Where and how would I sign up? Could I join this or is it to late? And. Where would I send the game?

SO, 48 hours, theme as yet unknown, I think a very important thing for me to keep in mind will be keep it simple. A finished simple is much better than a tenth of a maniacally complex.

The list of possible themes and the fact that quite a few overlap have already got the gears grinding. Most fun in head concept is for machines, most unlikely to be realised in 48 hours concept goes with the parrallel worlds themes.

Give me theme already damn you clocks!

On second thought...

I have a nice, long ride home in a car tomorrow. I may try to throw something together (brainstorm tonight, rapidly code tomorrow). I want to finish another game!

@Warzone: Make an account and submit a game through the submission form (though you have to post your game elsewhere and link to it, but we have the arcade here). A "I'm in" declaration post is not necessary though.
Do NOT PM me your questions, because I likely will not respond. If I have replied to your question on the forum, keep using that topic. Thanks!

It's music.

It sounded more soothing than upbeat to me. I thought the context would help me interpret it differently so I could get PUMPED!!!

Also Mother 3 is the best game ever so you should play it.

I have heard nothing but good things about it so I will definitely try to get a copy. I like when I get to use my old GBA.

EDIT: The cheapest copy is $70.00. Time to emulate.
I didn't even see this post.

You'll want to emulate anyway unless you speak Japanese or you have a means to play custom ROMs on your GBA.

When posting source code for LD, do we just post the folder containing our game, located in the games folder? Any info about source code would be appreciated.
