Need New Laptop to Run Stencyl

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a new laptop to exclusively run Stencyl and some other game building software. My budget is $800 or under. What is the best laptop that I can get?

Edit: Not looking for a Mac right now, but may be later.

Also, on the topic, what specs should I be looking at for optimum use?

I know more about Stencyl now.

Lots of RAM, lots of CPU cores, and that's about it. Maybe mention if you're after a Mac or PC ?

Dont worry to much about a pc laptop. I am running a I3 woth 4 gigs of ram 17". And i can do with it whatever i want. Only the initial android compiling takes ages, but after that still fast. If you also want to build for apple, you should look at a simple laptop with about the same specs. Anything higher would just be a bonus.

And I thought I was the only one with high Android compile times. Unfortunately, the high amount of assets I'm putting in Stencyl are causing it to slow down, and those out of memory errors are especially annoying. I will also be getting a Mac later on to build for apple.

You said your are not looking for a Mac right now, but why spend $800 now and even more later? You could simply buy a brand new MBP for $1000-$1500 or find a cheap one for under $500.

It's worth the extra cost to me to have access to both Windows and iOS in the near future, but I'm just much more used to Windows at this point. Still, it never hurts to be frugal :p

Get a used/refurbished Mac and dual boot Windows on it if you must.

personally im using Asus T200, not the best but I like the portability, battery life (6,7 hours) and it detachable function to turn into tablet. Stencyl works fine with Intel Atom 1.46ghz with 2GB ram, albeit slow once your project gets larger in size

depends on your budget and your preference on portability, could use mine as a starting point :P

Is a mac needed to develop for iOS?

I have a win7 laptop, currently developing for Android and Google Play, but then was just planning on getting a cheap iPhone later down the line just to test on before publishing to iTunes....

I could always just pass my .stencyl file to someone who has a Mac and iPhone to compile the game though right?  There's no further or different coding etc to do?  Just setting up the certificates and Xcode...

Well, from what I know, the certificates and stuff take a bit of work to set up. But yeah, if you could find somebody who was willing to do that, sure.

The final submission step (Application Loader) still requires a Mac, so the only way to get someone else to publish your game under your account is to give them all your account details.  I already do this with Macincloud, but I certainly wouldn't consider it for a random person.
