Hello Stencylers :) ! For those who don't know Stencylforge is shutting down 2016.

The Future of StencylForge

Our original vision behind StencylForge was to make it a shared space for artists and developers to share their works with others. Solutions to common game development problems would be documented, and over time, we'd build an impressive library of these common solutions.

StencylForge has turned out differently from that vision and while interesting things have been created, many are using it as a backup solution for storing their games online. This isn't what we had in mind, and it isn't something we'd like to continue in the long term.

To that end, we plan to sunset StencylForge in 2016, so we can focus all of our energy on the core toolset. StencylForge will remain read-only for some time (so all data will be retained and accessible), but we will start blocking new submissions in Stencyl 3.4 and in all versions sometime in 2016.

is there going to be any version of forge in the future? Or a place on the forums to post cool things they made so others can use as well?

I think the forums do a pretty good job of accomplishing most of those tasks as it is. The "Ask a Question" forum has a wide variety of solutions to common development problems. The forums house many extensions and behaviors, and several artists share graphics, music, etc. either in the art section or on their own site linked to in the art section.

The main advantage to StencylForge that I saw was that it streamlined the process of downloading and installing new assets. It's not hard to import resources, but for a total beginner it made building a library of behaviors just a little bit easier.

I think just a little reorganization of the forums could serve just as well as StencylForge. For example, "Game Art" could be split into requests and "shared assets", so that assets could be more easily found. Or, maybe "Shared Resources" could be split into the categories StencylForge had, with an additional "requests" sub-forum so that the resources areas could be easily browsed without requests "getting in the way".

And maybe a little organization of the ask a question section.. seems there's a lot in there.. I'd like to look through it easier

yeah thats a shame, I do use the Forge every now and then. Didn't realise people were using it for backups though.

We haven't decided on a specific time table yet. That's why we haven't said anything about it on official channels yet.

What exact version this happens in is irrelevant since we'll shut the whole upload functionality off - you won't be able to use an older version to circumvent it (it will just fail less gracefully).

LIBERADO and some other C experts created many amazing behaviors, it would be great if these example sources would be downloadable from the new Stencylforge.

An easy way to share resources is to post them on the forum. It's already the preferred method for sharing extensions, and I think it works just as well for behaviors, game kits, or other resources.

Making these behaviors downloadable doesn't necessarily have to happen on Forge. Using a approval system would have made Forge much better, but then again I understand why it hasn't been done that way considering the time it would take to review every submission.

Stencylforge did help me so much to understand a lot of concepts, hopefully that feature gets improved instead of erased.

All my behaviors will be uploaded to my website soon anyway, only my tutorials will be moved to the Stencyl website
