Geometry TD (PUBLISHED)

I am doing a set of Twitch streams to showcase the development of my project, which I am calling simply "Geometry TD". It's a simple title for a simple graphics game. The mechanics are to go far deeper though. I am attempting to take all of the aspects I loved from the Protector series and expand on them while ridding myself of the parts I do not like (such as capped units or "absorb"). The current idea is to do 6 different types of geometry shapes as towers, each with its generic pros/cons, but each one can be upgraded in the same ways (for example, one could have a slow-firing, low-range but total AOE circle tower that you upgrade to be a poison tower or have a long-distance star tower that is also a poison tower).

EDIT: Added in the dates/lengths of the streams

EDIT 2: As of 8/27, the game is now up on Kongregate! http://www.kongregate.com/games/0_Tuo_0/geometric-destruction-td

Streams:
7/20 (1:44): Startup: Creation of path code
7/22 (0:59): Finishing path code, start of tower placement

I was a late converter to Twitch myself. I was one who liked the simplicity of LiveStream and how I could have it open as a chat 24/7 as well. However, when LiveStream decided to totally change up their format to try to mimic Twitch (years ago), they just botched the system, forcing even more of their few loyal users (like me) to switch. I still don't "like" Twitch myself, but it is simply the best option in a host of bad ones.  That's my opinion.

Also, I will likely be going live at least once, possibly twice today.

7/27 (1:07): While it was originally supposed to be a short broadcast to solve the bugs from last night, I ended up adding in the start of the spawn bar as well (well, my variation of it).

7/28 (0:54): Faced down countless of my own bugs but got the enemy/tower combination working, so now I can officially declare I have made a "game" as it is "playable"… but needs a LOT of balance and more items thrown in.

8/1 (1:10): Finished phase one of the exp system. Got level ups working, but not the special skills.
8/2 (2:45): Totally revamped balance of the game, but now the random generators seem to be working rather well :).

TO DO: The main in-game thing right now is adding in UI and the special tower abilities.

8/4 (2:14): Added in the specials and adjustments for world upgrades as well.

EDIT: Note that Twitch only saves videos for 2 weeks, so the first video is now unavailable. If you want to re-watch any of the streams, I would suggest doing so ASAP before they disappear.

UPDATE: As of August 5th, I am no longer planning on doing the process on Twitch as the interest has been thin at best. Now I can focus more on the coding and adding details as they come to me instead of waiting to do everything at once.

Today the game is now far closer to completion. The balance still needs some tinkering, but the UI is now mostly finished and feels much smoother. Once I can get the proper balance in place and any additional effects shown, all that is left is to do the world map aspects... which admittedly is a rather sizable project in its own right, but I have been preparing for it ahead of time, so hopefully things will go smoothly.

The balance is still a bit wonky, but in some ways I have come to enjoy it. It is far too easy to get lured into a false sense of security of weak waves only to get suddenly decimated by a wave that is full-power (that you could have destroyed if you hadn't grown complacent).

I have spent most of today's time working on effects, and besides the loot picture, I think I have gotten most of them down. It is interesting working with images/instances instead of my old way of using actors. There is some additional flexibility, but there are also unexpected challenges. One of my favorite additions is a little "happy face" on the towers that rotates to  look at the enemies. I had one inside of a star that was focused on speed and the face was whirling around like crazy on that aforementioned wave that beat my defenses :D .

Just spent another few hours on it. Spent it all on the loot system. The loot requires such a balancing act between all of the other aspects that if I mess something up, it can disrupt the entire game. I hope I am at least getting a decent balance down as I make it. As of now, there are five types of loot: Equippable, EXP potions, Temporary Boosts, and [new] crafting. I am beginning to wonder about my own sanity to include crafting as another option... may take it out.

Whatever does happen, I can certainly say that a high loot ability WILL pay off in this game in the long run. For anyone who was counting, I only mentioned four types thus far. The fifth is a total level up for a certain criteria. With over a dozen areas one can upgrade, it is not necessarily OP, but a high looting ability will certainly start to accelerate one's growth... then again, as all abilities can upgraded ad infinitum, any of them can become OP eventually :P
