Old Bugs (1.x/2.x) / Newgrounds ad makes regular cursor show
« on: March 06, 2012, 12:17:39 pm »
I may have gone entirely mad, but it appears that displaying a Newgrounds ad automatically enables the standard cursor on top of the Flixel cursor, so that you end up with two cursors and no way of getting rid of the standard one. ("Hide mouse cursor" hides the Flixel one.)

Flash's garbage collector?
Several Flash contents playing simultaneously?

Does the game recover from slowdowns or do they persist?

It recovers when the scene is over. They're not running anything else.

So I've made this shmup (can't share it, it's for sponsorship). Everything runs smoothly, even levels with a ton of enemies.

But then, sometimes, playtesters have reported extreme slowdowns, starting at various points in the level.

I can't figure out why this could be happening. It's not the number of actors, since the slowdowns have been reported in levels with few actors. It's not some improper loop or timed behavior. It's not connected to any specific actor, since plenty of levels with the same actors don't have any problems. It's not a scene behavior, since all levels have exactly the same ones, and most levels are fine.

The problem is rare - about 3-4 out of 50 levels. But I can't figure it out. What else could be causing it? What am I not thinking of?

Do you remember if you hit the memory limit before or after this starts to occur?  This is looking to be a side effect of low memory/ memory leaks (which is addressed in the unstable nightlys, but they're unstable).  There aren't any normal errors showing in the logs.

You might need to grab one of the higher memory caps exes from here if you have a large game.

The game is fairly large, and I hit the memory limit regularly. I'll try the alternative exes. (I'm not having a huge problem anyway, but I thought it was important to let everyone know about this potential bug.) Thanks!

I just observed it happen during a session. I set the object to "Cannot be pushed", saved, exited, re-entered - nothing. Then a while later it was back at "Normal".

I'm reattaching the logs, in case that helps. The object where I just observed it is called Drone (one of my few non-silly names).

Welcome to Stencyl, Jonas! :)

Hi! Glad to be here. Been working on a fairly large game for a while now, and enjoying Stencyl very much.

Besides attaching your logs like Mike suggested, do these settings get reset during the same session of working with StencylWorks or only after you close and reopen it? Are you saving along the way?

I'm saving obsessively. And I'm pretty sure the resetting happens during a session, though I'm not 100% certain. What this affects is the ships in a shmup, and since it has a lot of ships, I usually only notice after a while. I'm pretty sure this is more than just me being silly, though. My first assumption is always user error.

Attaching the logs.

As someone who has been making games for ten years, and now does this professionally (i.e. someone who is poor and has to work a lot):

- Try working on small projects that you know you can finish.
- Always be aware that big projects, hell, all projects, will go through phases where they are more work than fun. This is also true of all other artforms, from theatre to film to writing. Sometimes you just need to keep going until it's fun again.
- Take breaks! I know a lot of game developers, including myself, who have experienced severe burnout. It can take a real toll on your health, too. Relax. Play some games. Go for a walk. Read a book. It really helps to recharge your batteries.

The problem is pretty simple: I've got a bunch of actors set to "Cannot be pushed" and it would appear that Stencyl randomly resets them to "Normal". I've tried to find a pattern, but haven't really succeeded so far. It's definitely happening, though.

To clarify: this is happening in StencylWorks. It's not a bug where the setting claims to be one thing in Stencyl and then does something completely different in the game. But I can go through all my actors, set every one to "Cannot be pushed" and then a while later some will be back at "Normal".
