Ask a Question / Create a clone of an actor - SOLVED
« on: August 11, 2019, 12:08:59 am »

Hi again,

I'm trying to create a clone of the arrow actor.

http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/40246

When the player presses shoot I would like an arrow to appear which would be fainter than the main arrow - so the player can see their previous angle of attack. The only problem I've got is my code for the camera follows the ball which is the last created actor. If I were to create an arrow actor then the camera would follow this. I'm trying to play around with having 2 arrows at the start - one is hidden and only appears when the shoot button is pressed. Just can't get it working at the moment.

Any help as always is greatly appreciated

John

.....

Have solved this but will put up the solution.

I made a copy of the arrow and stripped out all the code. I then had it pointing to the shot direction after pressing shoot and made it show when attempts were greater than 1

Thanks Jeffrey - works just I want it to now!

Ask a Question / Make an actor appear on screen in a fixed position...
« on: August 10, 2019, 01:03:20 pm »
..when another actor is in motion.

http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/40246

So I'm tweaking a game that I put on the App Store, didn't get much traction, but thought I would endeavour to finish it to the best of my abilities..

I'm playing around with AIM/SHOOT/RETRY behaviour.

When the player kicks the ball the camera follows the ball which is fine. However, I want a "Retry" button to appear when the ball has been kicked. I require this "Retry" button to stay in the same place on screen, regardless of where the ball is in motion, so the player can choose to retry before the ball has landed or stopped moving.

Currently the Retry button appears in the place I want when it is unhidden but it doesn't move when with the camera does. It appears as a static actor in place when I want it to be always in the bottom right of the screen. I have tried a few scenarios to make it work, using a while loop just crashes the game! Here is the code I have used in the updating section of level 1.

..The other option I've read up is using the anchor code block. However, everytime I use it just hides the actor.

Any help would always be greatly appreciated!

John

So it’s been a year since I got my stencyl subscription and Apple developer account. My stencyl subscription has run out and my Apple one is due this Wednesday. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using stencyl and getting to know how to put a game together for an app launch has been eye opening, the amount of work involved is incredible, especially if you are to do it right. I think for a hobby it is hard to justify paying over £250 on stencyl subscription and Apple developer account. The amount of downloads for my app is just a couple of hundred over 2 months. And after reading Colin lanes tweets on his latest launch it sounds even hard for indie devs to get a foothold in the market. I will be looking into developing more web based games so in the near future I can see myself re subscribing to stencyl but not sure about the mobile market? The hoops needed to jump through to launch an app can be soul destroying and almost takes all the fun out of the process. Especially if you have an hour or so a day in between juggling a full time job and family commitments.  Trying to launch on android was the most frustrating part, I just never launched my app correctly and it kept crashing!  Thanks if you downloaded my app and hope to be back again in the future soon  with another stupid idea

Ask a Question / Android app crashing
« on: May 18, 2019, 09:27:01 am »
Hi all,

So I have an app that works in both on the appstore and in amazon appstore. However the same app does not work on android. I have done some testing and the error that comes up is this:

java.lang.IllegalStateException
com.google.android.gms.common.internal.zzf$zza.zzc

I have googled and there are some helpful articles, even if they are a little hard to understand.

Has anyone come across this error before and knows how to fix? I will be ever so grateful!

John

Have you set your max SDK to 26?

I had to read this page over and over again a few times but in the end it worked! http://www.stencyl.com/help/view/setup-android

Ask a Question / Re: What Java JDK should I be using?
« on: May 17, 2019, 02:07:15 pm »
Off the top of the head I just downloaded jdk 8. I didn’t bother uninstalling jdk12. Then i made sure stencyl was pointing at jdk 8 before proceeding. I think I also set the minimum and maximum api to 21 and 26.
Hope this helps?

Hi. I went through all this a couple of weeks back. You have to stick with JDK 8.

Thanks. Seems stable on iOS. I’ll get myself a better android phone and do some testing!

Thanks -  I've added this to the todo list. I think when I added the trees I didn't scale them down to x4 - silly really as I did it with the rest of the actors.

After a bit of testing I've locked down the time trial game. This part of the game was just an offshoot of the main game but I noticed people were playing this before the challenge game. This becomes unlocked once you have played the challenge game.

The game should be live on android/ios/amazon by the weekend hopefully. I've dug out my old android device but can't seem to test it as my device isn't supported. If anyone is able to check that it is working on this OS that would be great? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stencyl.crossbarkevin

Hello,
I've been working on a fun little app called Crossbar Kevin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXTRVUOn6s4

Kevin is a young boy that enjoys playing football in the garden. He loves to score goals.
However, his father, Big Mick, feels that is not the best use of his time.
In order to hone Kevin's skills, dad only wants him to hit the cross bar. If you achieve this then he is happy. If you don't then he will be pour scorn on your soul!
Are you ready to impress dad?

It is going out at the end of the month. However, if you would like to take part in some testing by using TestFlight please drop me a line. There will be a public link to testing coming once apple have reviewed the build.
