Ask a Question / disabling the jump and run movement momentarily...
« on: July 16, 2020, 02:13:12 pm »
I have a character that uses the jump and run movement within my game. When the character reaches a certain check point I want the user to be unable to move the character whilst I execute a line of code for the actor to speak to the user using speech bubbles. I then my character to be able to move after he has spoken. What would be the best way to stop the user from moving my character whilst the game momentarily pauses for this to happen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ask a Question / Re: AppStore from Windows PC

Yes you do need a Mac . I tried a Mac emulator from windows for all about a day but that was a waste of time. Buying and using a Mac was far easier to upload to AppStore

With a bit of extra time on my hands recently I thought I would update how the game proceeded.

After getting little to no traction on either android (incredibly buggy), iOS - no real interest and amazon appstore (this was the easiest appstore to deploy to) I thought I should persist a little with getting the game out there but in a different format. HTML5

So I proceeded to set up accounts and post the game on the following websites in July 2019. No real strategy - just put up in lots of different places and see what happens.

GameJolt - 24 views - 53 views
Newgrounds - 857 views
Superwerer - 43 views
ArcadeSpot - 1565 views
CrazyGames - 8351 plays

CrazyGames was the only place that was offering any kind of revenue and initially the game did quite well but now only trickles in a few pennies a day.

A few days after posting the game in a few places I then got an email from AddictingGames who wanted to upload the game to their site. Received a half-decent sum for the game too so was delighted! Currently it has 4938 plays.

So here is what I learned.
Given my limited skillset and drawing skills I will stick to producing HTML5 games for the time being. It is more straightforward
and although I learned a lot uploaded to the iOS App Store I never worked out why uploading to android never worked.
Producing games for HTML5 meant I worked more on the game development. When my mindset was geared towards app development I spent longer on uploading and troubleshooting to get the app to the store, uploading to HTML5 sites was far easier!!

Ask a Question / Re: how to stick an arm on a body
« on: October 01, 2019, 02:42:46 pm »
Thanks - I was able to pick apart the rag doll extension and now have the arm stuck to the body and behaving how I wanted it to!

Here is the code for reference should anyone come across the same issue.

Ask a Question / how to stick an arm on a body
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:31:13 pm »

I've read about this and tried to understand what to do but I can't seem to stick an arm onto a body! When I add the code attached I come up with an arm that floats away from the body. When I play with stick joints I seem to either crash the game or I cannot get the joint to attach in the right place. I cannot seem to customise where the joint appears as it always appears at the centre of the character in the scene editor.

Here is a link of what I am trying achieve the arm from this game here:

Any help would be great! Thanks.

Ask a Question / Re: Implementing API advice
« on: September 01, 2019, 01:30:03 pm »
So the thing that I thought that would be hard was easy and the easy thing that I saved for tonight has me scratching my head.
To add AddictingGame branding they have sent me a link to some HTML5 stingers to upload.

There are 2 .xml files linked to 2 png files. This would be the intro to my game.

Is it possible in Stencyl to be able to upload them as an intro? Otherwise I will have to take the images they have sent me apart and turn them into a GIF.

As always, thanks in advance! John

They PM'd me a SWAG API developer guide which was fairly confusing. I think I've cracked it though. I've edited the source code by downloading an app called BRACKETS on my Mac. I then copy and pasted the code into the index.html file which then has implemented an swag-api.js file. When I compared it to their test version here: they seemed to match up.

Luckily my brain still remembers some html and Java from my university days!

I'm delivering the update to them later today, if there any further probs I should post up an update.

Thanks for trying to look into this, if you need any further info let me know. John

Ask a Question / Implementing API advice
« on: September 01, 2019, 12:03:10 am »

I was wondering whether anyone has had any dealings with AddictingGames and more specifically their API? They've made an offer for my game and want to add branding (which is straight forward) but then they want me to implement their API (not so easy!).

I've done a bit of hunting around the internet but can't find a tutorial or much help on how to implement this API? The API they use is called SWAG API.

If anyone has any help or advice on how to get started I would be ever so grateful,

Ask a Question / Create a clone of an actor - SOLVED
« on: August 11, 2019, 12:08:59 am »

Hi again,

I'm trying to create a clone of the arrow actor.

When the player presses shoot I would like an arrow to appear which would be fainter than the main arrow - so the player can see their previous angle of attack. The only problem I've got is my code for the camera follows the ball which is the last created actor. If I were to create an arrow actor then the camera would follow this. I'm trying to play around with having 2 arrows at the start - one is hidden and only appears when the shoot button is pressed. Just can't get it working at the moment.

Any help as always is greatly appreciated

Have solved this but will put up the solution.

I made a copy of the arrow and stripped out all the code. I then had it pointing to the shot direction after pressing shoot and made it show when attempts were greater than 1

Thanks Jeffrey - works just I want it to now!

Ask a Question / Make an actor appear on screen in a fixed position...
« on: August 10, 2019, 01:03:20 pm »
..when another actor is in motion.

So I'm tweaking a game that I put on the App Store, didn't get much traction, but thought I would endeavour to finish it to the best of my abilities..

I'm playing around with AIM/SHOOT/RETRY behaviour.

When the player kicks the ball the camera follows the ball which is fine. However, I want a "Retry" button to appear when the ball has been kicked. I require this "Retry" button to stay in the same place on screen, regardless of where the ball is in motion, so the player can choose to retry before the ball has landed or stopped moving.

Currently the Retry button appears in the place I want when it is unhidden but it doesn't move when with the camera does. It appears as a static actor in place when I want it to be always in the bottom right of the screen. I have tried a few scenarios to make it work, using a while loop just crashes the game! Here is the code I have used in the updating section of level 1.

..The other option I've read up is using the anchor code block. However, everytime I use it just hides the actor.

Any help would always be greatly appreciated!

So it’s been a year since I got my stencyl subscription and Apple developer account. My stencyl subscription has run out and my Apple one is due this Wednesday. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using stencyl and getting to know how to put a game together for an app launch has been eye opening, the amount of work involved is incredible, especially if you are to do it right. I think for a hobby it is hard to justify paying over £250 on stencyl subscription and Apple developer account. The amount of downloads for my app is just a couple of hundred over 2 months. And after reading Colin lanes tweets on his latest launch it sounds even hard for indie devs to get a foothold in the market. I will be looking into developing more web based games so in the near future I can see myself re subscribing to stencyl but not sure about the mobile market? The hoops needed to jump through to launch an app can be soul destroying and almost takes all the fun out of the process. Especially if you have an hour or so a day in between juggling a full time job and family commitments.  Trying to launch on android was the most frustrating part, I just never launched my app correctly and it kept crashing!  Thanks if you downloaded my app and hope to be back again in the future soon  with another stupid idea

Got some crash data now. Is anyone knowledgeable enough to tell me the problem? Thanks in advance.
