Ask a Question / disabling the jump and run movement momentarily...
« on: July 16, 2020, 02:13:12 pm »
I have a character that uses the jump and run movement within my game. When the character reaches a certain check point I want the user to be unable to move the character whilst I execute a line of code for the actor to speak to the user using speech bubbles. I then my character to be able to move after he has spoken. What would be the best way to stop the user from moving my character whilst the game momentarily pauses for this to happen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ask a Question / how to stick an arm on a body
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:31:13 pm »

I've read about this and tried to understand what to do but I can't seem to stick an arm onto a body! When I add the code attached I come up with an arm that floats away from the body. When I play with stick joints I seem to either crash the game or I cannot get the joint to attach in the right place. I cannot seem to customise where the joint appears as it always appears at the centre of the character in the scene editor.

Here is a link of what I am trying achieve the arm from this game here:

Any help would be great! Thanks.

Ask a Question / Implementing API advice
« on: September 01, 2019, 12:03:10 am »

I was wondering whether anyone has had any dealings with AddictingGames and more specifically their API? They've made an offer for my game and want to add branding (which is straight forward) but then they want me to implement their API (not so easy!).

I've done a bit of hunting around the internet but can't find a tutorial or much help on how to implement this API? The API they use is called SWAG API.

If anyone has any help or advice on how to get started I would be ever so grateful,

Ask a Question / Create a clone of an actor - SOLVED
« on: August 11, 2019, 12:08:59 am »

Hi again,

I'm trying to create a clone of the arrow actor.

When the player presses shoot I would like an arrow to appear which would be fainter than the main arrow - so the player can see their previous angle of attack. The only problem I've got is my code for the camera follows the ball which is the last created actor. If I were to create an arrow actor then the camera would follow this. I'm trying to play around with having 2 arrows at the start - one is hidden and only appears when the shoot button is pressed. Just can't get it working at the moment.

Any help as always is greatly appreciated

Have solved this but will put up the solution.

I made a copy of the arrow and stripped out all the code. I then had it pointing to the shot direction after pressing shoot and made it show when attempts were greater than 1

Ask a Question / Make an actor appear on screen in a fixed position...
« on: August 10, 2019, 01:03:20 pm »
..when another actor is in motion.

So I'm tweaking a game that I put on the App Store, didn't get much traction, but thought I would endeavour to finish it to the best of my abilities..

I'm playing around with AIM/SHOOT/RETRY behaviour.

When the player kicks the ball the camera follows the ball which is fine. However, I want a "Retry" button to appear when the ball has been kicked. I require this "Retry" button to stay in the same place on screen, regardless of where the ball is in motion, so the player can choose to retry before the ball has landed or stopped moving.

Currently the Retry button appears in the place I want when it is unhidden but it doesn't move when with the camera does. It appears as a static actor in place when I want it to be always in the bottom right of the screen. I have tried a few scenarios to make it work, using a while loop just crashes the game! Here is the code I have used in the updating section of level 1.

..The other option I've read up is using the anchor code block. However, everytime I use it just hides the actor.

Any help would always be greatly appreciated!

Ask a Question / Android app crashing
« on: May 18, 2019, 09:27:01 am »
Hi all,

So I have an app that works in both on the appstore and in amazon appstore. However the same app does not work on android. I have done some testing and the error that comes up is this:

I have googled and there are some helpful articles, even if they are a little hard to understand.

Has anyone come across this error before and knows how to fix? I will be ever so grateful!

I've been working on a fun little app called Crossbar Kevin:

Kevin is a young boy that enjoys playing football in the garden. He loves to score goals.
However, his father, Big Mick, feels that is not the best use of his time.
In order to hone Kevin's skills, dad only wants him to hit the cross bar. If you achieve this then he is happy. If you don't then he will be pour scorn on your soul!
Are you ready to impress dad?

It is going out at the end of the month. However, if you would like to take part in some testing by using TestFlight please drop me a line. There will be a public link to testing coming once apple have reviewed the build.

Ask a Question / How do I save a low score attribute?!
« on: May 10, 2019, 10:21:48 am »
I'm sure the answer is there poking my in the face but I am trying to get my game to store the lowest score.

Its easy to store a high score as a high score will overwrite a previous high score.

The trouble I have is at the end of the game I am comparing the current score to the lowest score. However at the start of the game the lowest score is always 0 so my current score will never overwrite this. Does this make sense? I have attached a screenshot of code that doesn't seem to work?!

Ask a Question / App scaling issue
« on: May 04, 2019, 01:50:27 am »

So I've created a game at 480 x 320 to be turned into an app

In the mobile display settings I have selected "Landscape". App type = universal.

In scale mode I have used "Scale to fit(Full screen) - which is the recommended on the help page.

Here are the results below. Can anyone suggest how I would get the same look on an iPad as an iPhone? Or is it worth setting the App Type to be iPhone only? Does this make a difference if an app is for iPhone only rather than universal? Last question - or is easier to extend the scene width?

Funny thing is it looks the way it should on an iPad rather than an iPhone...

Any help would be great.

Ask a Question / How to stop an animation?
« on: April 12, 2019, 06:02:41 am »

I've created a power bar that goes up and down. The mechanics of my game work by pressing the mouse button a ball is fired in the direction of a rotating arrow. I've got so far that when I press the mouse the arrow stops moving, however when I press the mouse again the power bar keeps going up and down! I've tried all kinds of jiggery pokery but it just isn't playing ball. I have attached the code blocks for the test level and the code for the power bar plus the current state of the game so you can see more clearly what is occurring!

Or is there another way of stopping an animation?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as always! John

Journals / Crossbar Kevin
« on: March 10, 2019, 01:10:43 am »
During the week I came up with the idea of a simple crossbar challenge game. Not wishing to follow the other crossbar games out there, I thought I would put something together where there is a young lad (Kevin) who is practicing in the garden with his super competitive dad watching,

It uses the simple behaviour of a rotating arrow which I used in Blob Ball but I'm developing a powerbar too. If I get the time I will experiment a little with the way you fire a ball in the app Ball King.

To try and make it original and not too samey - if dads pride goes through the roof, you have to start trying to hit the crossbar with other objects such as; the cat, a rugby ball,  your sisters favourite doll, mum's frying pan. If you displease dad with your awful attempts he will start delivering some cutting remarks. Will try to create a trampoline level too where the ball has to hit in order to bounce onto the cross bar. Also dad will move the cross bar further away and see if you can kick it over obstacles such as his favourite tree, or his best mate Long John.

The scoring system will be on attempts. My initial aim is to make 20 levels.

Here is a screenshot of the prototype I put together this morning. I did all the rubbish art work myself! I've already got a simple prototype working in stencyl and hope to get a work in progress out by the end of the month. Let me know what you think

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / Evolution²
« on: February 20, 2019, 11:39:08 am »
Here is the first version of a game I've put together.
The premise is you start off as a basic square - however as you progress through the game you start to evolve - giving you different abilities to move onto the next stage of the game.
In this version you have to progress through the first easier part of the game to gain back your eyes. Ideas for the latter stages of the game is to evolve into a mini boat for some water levels, a triangle - the player has to keep you upright, then finally gaining wings to take flight.

I've tried to keep the look basic - even using a Spectrum 128K bold font!

Let us know what you think,

Ask a Question / Diagonal tile sets
« on: February 17, 2019, 12:23:51 pm »

I'm experimenting with tilesets and a couple of tile sets from stencylforge leave a noticeable missing outline when I use a 45 degree tile. Is there a way of deleting this outline or shall I just investigate other tile sets?

See pic attached

iPhone / iPad / Android / Blob Ball - pop those red balloons!
« on: January 18, 2019, 11:21:28 pm »
Blob Ball now available on AppStore.

Touch the screen to fire a ball - your aim is to pop the red balloons, avoid hitting the yellow balloons, and finally avoid being hit by Rob the Red Blob.

Can you score 2000 points in 60 seconds?

Ask a Question / opening link to another game in App Store
« on: December 14, 2018, 11:23:42 pm »

I'm trying to create a link so users can click a button that will take them to the App Store to download my other game. Here is the code below. However, when I click nothing happens. Does this feature work in TestFlight?

Many thanks
