it goes without saying to be very careful if you're messing around in the actual game data files.
I backed up my folder and the file of what I was changing to be be sure!

I guess it's not really recommended to do this, but I had invested three years of my time into this game
and I didn't want to walk away from it, so I was willing to monkey around to get it working again!

Sometimes all it takes is another look....

So, after the last ramble I took another look at the logs and it seems like Java was throwing the error because of an expected value was "Null" and not numeric.  I previously took the "Null" as the thrown error, however this turned out to be what Java had read and since it was expecting a Null value it fell over.

I looked in the game.xml file and found only one item with a Null value, this: simulatorOS="Null"
I changed this to: simulatorOS="10.2"

The project now loads and asks to be updated!

I've been looking into this over the last few weeks; on an "on and off" basis.

The logs point to Java falling over when it tries to load my game project.

I've rolled back my version of Java to a previous build, but this hasn't solved the issue.
It now appears it could be an issue within the structure and data of the game
project itself.

There are some differences in the game.xml file between projects, but this could be normal.

What I'd like to know is what files does Stencyl look at when opening a game project and
in which order, this might help me narrow down where my error is.

Lava is clearly reporting a Null value, where it expects a value to be.

Again, any ideas are much appreciated!

I've foolishly updated and now my I can't seem to open certain game projects.

I've opened Stencyl and then opened a game project which shows the "ouch this shouldn't have happened" dialog.
(Attached is the .zip with the logs)

This only seems to be affecting games that were edited in the previous version of Stencyl, anything beyond this
version (such as Dorsaka) is prompted to upgrade to the newest version.

Any input is much appreciated!

It seems to me in my lurker world view, that there are a number of people, and I include myself in those ranks, that are very passionate about Stencyl and it's future development.  The last few pages of this thread are testimony to that.

It think that a few of us are primarily concerned that the pace of Stencyls development and that future iterations of other tech (such as Unity's new 2D tools recently announced ( would eventually make Stencyl redundant or would simply see more users, like Matt, use Stencyl as a starting block and then make a move to a different engine or development suite that would provide them with the features, functions and access to platforms they require.

When DarkTimmy started this thread (from the Ghost Song thread (well done, again, Matt)) there was an idea to suggest to Jon that a Kickstarter campaign would be a good way for this passionate community to help directly fund the growth of Stencyl.

I would second such a proposal and I have the feeling other users would be up for providing some financial assistance, too! 

Obviously this is Jons product, he's the primary developer and it's his hard work that has enabled us to create all manner of games and he dictates the future of Stencyl based on feedback and suggestions generated from the community.  It would be nice to know Jons thoughts on a potential Kickstarter are and the challenges that would arise; While it seems a simple enough job to add more programmers into the mix and be able to get things done quicker, it's just not that simple.

This rambling text has gone on far too long, but I would like to conclude and throw my two cents in to the pile and say that I would contribute, what I think is for me, a sizeable amount of money to the future development and expansion of Stencyl beyond V3.

I would, be very keen to hear Jons view on this.


My view on this is that it's not a good thing!

I, personally, don't want to see, nor would force a player into seeing, potentially revenue generating adverts with a game.  I remember seeing them in Battlefield 2142 and it breaking the immersion immediately.  If you want to generate revenue...generate revenue from selling a solid game rather than shoe horning real world ads into a non-real world space!

Probably the best and most engaging ending to a game I've ever played!

Another update!

Ghosts were congregating to a single screen....turns out they were being drawn to a single point!
They've been banished and order has returned to the lands!
Spirits will only congregate where their physical bodies became no more!

To celebrate getting an Imgur account, here's two new in game screen grabs...

I'm mostly convinced on implementing some kind of hint system into the game, so I'll be working and testing this out over the weekend and if it works out as not being too in your face I'll do another upload Monday morning!

Hello again,

I've been playing Dorsaka for a few days with some friends and after making a few notes I've issued a larger update to the game...

There was a bug which reports that you found a secret, when actually you hadn't (Sorry secret hunters).

I've added another screen to the end credits which is beyond the performance review screen and lists all the secrets you've discovered.  All the secrets you've haven't discovered are obfuscated but it gives visibility on what players have discovered when they're comparing notes!

So now you can say you've found 2 secrets and what they are!

I've also added a new secret to the game!

I'm currently toying around with the idea of having a set of cryptic hints to give you pointers about the nature of secrets, but not sure if that would spoil it all.

Again, feedback is appreciated, yo!

I like how I had little idea how far I'd progressed, especially when hearing about secrets and gods from this thread. Mysterious.

I would consider loosening up the collisions, mainly because level 1 I opened the gate, tried to enter, and couldn't. Turned out I was hitting the nearby walls. My worry is that many players may think that the game is broken or they're not "getting it" and give up (and give the game 1 star or thumbs down or three farts, depending on the rating system.)

There's a few things to discover in the game, there are a few hints here and there but it's mostly a case of figuring stuff out!

Since two for two have mentioned collisions a new version is now up with slightly less aggressive collision detection!  I loosened it off a little but theres still a decent area to get snagged up against something when the panic sets in!

Had to try a few times before I completed it. I can't remember what my final score was. But I believe it was rank B, 1of 7 secrets and meet 0 of 2 Gods. Looks like I have to explore more. It was a bit annoying to be stuck between blocks. Like it was difficult to walk. Overall I did enjoy playing :)

The collision areas are quite aggressive on purpose.  If it gets in the way too much, I can reduce the area checked!  Although I'm quite a masochist for stuff like that.  I like it, but loathe it!

Rank B?  Dorsaka doesn't provide a rank, but I'm guessing it'll be the route you took through the game!
