The first things that come to mind for me are border width and the position of the color gradient 'reflection'.

I believe that a thicker border would make the pieces seem stronger, and an off-center reflection would help.

I use Aviary's Toucan to help me pick out colors that work well with each other, maybe give that a try if you feel uninspired by your palette?

Would making a 'standing' animation vs. 'crouching' animation not work, for the same actor? If you switch the animations instead of having the frames be different, you can move the collision box.

You'll probably want to start with the Back and Forth behavior, instead of Wander.  Did you choose Wander for the randomness?

Sounds like the Pause + Unpauseable actors would be easiest, and just move them 'off screen' when in play?

A friend of mine was trying it out awhile ago, which is when I downloaded it the first time. Didn't get far, must've been sidetracked by other things.

Anyway, I think another friend on Twitter (@triptych - a web dev for Yahoo!) mentioned something recently that reminded me of Stencyl, so here I am. Just in time for 2.0.
