Resolved Questions / [SOLVED] Long compilation times
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:39:17 am »
Has anyone noticed that after importing his/her project from Stencyl 2 to Stencyl 3, its compilation time takes much longer than in Stencyl 2? In my case, running the game with exactly the same setting, resources etc. is now roughly 4-5 times longer than before which results in me having to wait about 20 seconds every time I want to run the scene or the whole game. Is there a way to solve that? What could have caused that?

Ask a Question / Re: Not saving as .stencyl when exporting
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:13:07 am »
I found out that when I explicitly type .stencyl when typing the name of the file, it is indeed saved as .stencyl file. I mean, it is not a big deal, I can type the extension manually every time I export the file, but it just doesn't seem right compared to how exporting in Stencyl 2.2 worked.

Ask a Question / Not saving as .stencyl when exporting
« on: April 21, 2014, 10:01:05 am »

When I'm exporting my project in Stencyl 3.1, it is saved as just a random file - it is not being assigned a .stencyl extension as before. Therefore, when I try to import the game that has just been exported, Stencyl doesn't recognize this file and I can't open it. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you very much! It is working now.

Resolved Questions / [SOLVED] Video Player in Stencyl 3.1
« on: April 20, 2014, 09:57:51 am »
I've finally succeded in importing my game to Stencyl 3.1 from Stencyl 2 (it's been a loooooong way), I solved some issues which didn't allow me to open the game, but I still have to deal with Video Behaviour which worked perfectly in Stencyl 2. I know that most of the behaviours from Stencyl 2 are not compatible with Stencyl 3, but this one seems to have been ported to Haxe from ActionScript and is listed under "Utilities" as one of the preshipped Behaviours. Even though when I try to run it, a following error appears:

Video Player (98) -  Unknown identifier
Video Player (102) -  Unknown identifier

Do you know how can I fix that? And have any of you, dear Stencylers, managed to incorporate videos into your Stencyl 3 projects?

Thank you for your comment, MiscEtc. :)

One thing that we always repeat when showing this demo is that it serves mainly as the story introduction and is aimed to set the mood of the game. As the story unravels, we're planning to introduce pure gameplay sections - first one will be set just right after the last scene in the demo.

We don't want to pigeonhole SocioPath in any way. At the same time, we don't want it to be just an interactive movie where player has little or no control over the events in the game. Yes, the demo is very Dear Ester-esque in the sense of the story presentation and there will be more "cinematic" moments like this but we don't want to limit ourselves and we're working on delivering some proper gameplay to the final version as well. And we hope it will be quite enjoyable.

Resolved Questions / [SOLVED] Help with messy logs
« on: February 05, 2014, 12:10:12 pm »
I've been trying to save my game as an .swf file for a long time to no avail (I'm getting the usual nonsense: "Unable to export SWF to the requested location. Check your logs. Usually, the cause is an incompatible sound file."). Today I checked the logs and I've got like million errors in them. I have no idea which one is causing the problem. Can you help me, guys? I'm attaching my logs to the post.

petersdream - Thanks, that's very nice of you! We're struggling with Stencyl's limitations practically all the time, it is overloading and we can't upload the game on the Stencyl Arcade, but we are determined to finish this project using Stencyl. It would be great if we could show with SocioPath that Stencyl isn't just a tool for simple pixel art games.

colburt187 - Thank you! Do you really think that the traffic jam scene is of proper length? Some people tell us it's too long, but we really wanted to evoke the feeling of boredom and frustration in a player, just like in real life.

henson802 - We've got really talented artist, that's how I can respond. :)

Blob - Thanks for the constructive criticism! We didn't really want to reflect any game, as I mentioned, I didn't even play Heavy Rain, but if somebody would like to treat SocioPath as 2D equivalent of David Cage's game, then we're OK with that. The later part, which is supposed to be more focused on gameplay, should be more unexpected, I hope you will be pleasently surprised by how it unravels.

pyxelbit - Yeah, Every Day The Same Dream was definitely one of our inspirations. That't great to know that we're not the only ones who know and appreciate that game.

MiscEtc - Fantastic, we will be happy to send you a playable version. Now we're just working on reducing the size of the game, maybe we will be able to upload it on the web, then everybody will be able to try it on his own.

acarnivorousocean - Thanks, that's encouraging. And yes, we were definitely inspired by Heavy Rain, although it's a shame to admit that nobody from the team has never really played this game. :P

henson802 - They're just the looped animations set as foregrounds in scenes, not incredibly hard to do, although our artist tried to make it look attractive. The only problem is that it takes quite a lot of space.

lava flame2 - Why do you think so? Here is something to convince you:

UPDATE: Now you can play the demo on your own:

Hi guys, me and my small team have been working on our first game SocioPath (or, as we currently like to call it, "interactive story") for some time now and although we still have quite a lot to do (part of it is to implement pure gameplay sections), we decided to show the project to the public. Due to its size, we've recorded in-game footage instead of uploading it on sites like Kongregate or Newgrounds, but we hope that you will be able to assess at least the visual and audio side of the game as well as the general concept. Please be honest and straightforward - we're wondering if we should carry on with this project, develop it to a fully-fledged experience or just abandon it and focus on something different.

If somebody would like to play it through on his own, let us know, we can send an .swf file to be opened in a browser. Any feedback will be highly appreciated - we're just starting doing this stuff guys, we need your opinion!

Resolved Questions / Re: Some help with drawing text

Ok, thank you again guys, I've already said it in a different post, but this community is incredible!

Ok, thanks, it's working. Does anybody know how can I make the fade in effect? Should I manipulate opacity in some way to achieve it?

Resolved Questions / [SOLVED] Some help with drawing text
« on: February 01, 2014, 09:07:50 am »
Hi guys, I've got two questions about drawing:
1. Is it possible to adjust some effects to drawing, such as fading in and out text?
2. How can I delay the beginning of text drawing? I have to use "when drawing" function to draw something, but I suppose that time conditional won't work with that, will it? I just want to make my text appear for instance 2 seconds after the beginning of the scene. I'm not just making the text to appear, I've implemented this behaviour ( into my game to write the text letter by letter.

Thanks for your help

Ask a Question / Adjusting the background to the scene size
« on: January 07, 2014, 04:26:19 am »
Is there a way to move the background and adjust it to the size of the scene? Let's say my scene has 800x500 pixels and I want to set the background (800x166) in the middle of the scene. I know I can insert the background 800x500 which is transparent in the upper and bottom part, but that won't do for me. It seems to be such a simple option, yet I can't find it...
