Ask a Question / Re: API
« on: September 28, 2016, 08:01:00 am »
I assume you mean that you wish to connect to a server - possibly over HTTP since you mention a URL - and get information back from the server for use in the game. Yes, this is possible. You could check out some of the details of the multiplayer extensions, or other behaviors intended to connect to servers, etc.

Well that "specific place" has an x,y coordinate. If you're in Scene Designer you can find that value in the bottom-right corner of the screen (image below). If you're in the game you could display the coordinates in the scene with a behavior. You could also put another object there and move to that position. Basically there are a lot of possibilities depending on what you're trying to do.

I have mastered the art of starting projects. Now to work on the other 90% of finishing them... ;D

Game Art / Re: Anybody use wacom art tablet or any other tablet?

I bought a Wacom Bamboo off of ebay a while ago. It's definitely handy but like any art skill it takes practice. Also, if you're not used to holding a pen/pencil all day or writing a lot, the muscles in your hand will cramp up. It's just like exercising any other muscle; you have to build it up.

Yeah, I know that some of the platforms come with limitations, unfortunately. Still, there's room for overall improvement regardless.

Suggestion from Discord;

Justin: NES Zelda-like slide transition (actor stays visible)
Self: Allow use of custom shader code to handle a transition

I've been feeling the coding bug recently. While I've been poking code together for our very own JinxBot (a channel bot that does stuff in IRC and Discord) in my occasional free time, which has helped, I'd like to do some more game-related stuff too. I don't feel like starting a big game project right now, however.

So I had an idea instead; perhaps people would like to see some more scene transition options? I can't guarantee any results but I'm reasonably confident that, over time, I'll be able to put together an extension that adds some new ones.

So tell me; what transition options and types would you like to see? Go wild and brainstorm! Even if I can't pull it off in the end, I want to hear the idea. Maybe it'll lead to something eventually. :)

Chit-Chat / Re: Concerns about official Stencyl activity

Not that I owe anyone anything but here's an update on my part as one of the Master Stencyler "mods".

I've never made it a secret that I'm a hobbyist with no intentions to "go pro" with game development. As long as I'm having fun - and have the time to do it - that's what I'm doing. My output is minimal for all the complex reasons of being a father and husband and that's just my life unfortunately.
That said, being a "Master Stencyler" has never been about volume of output but rather, not surprisingly, mastery of the tool and sharing that knowledge with the community. While Jon's never said it outright, I'm sure that this is one of the big reasons that the forum titles are deliberately not tied to post count.
It's true that since I'm in it for the fun, I rarely have a completed project. Everything is experimental and I typically share those experiments freely with everyone. That's part of the content in my signature (which a few other share), in fact. Being part of the "League of Idiotic Stencylers" is not just a joke; it's a mindset where we see what can be done with Stencyl when we think outside of the box and try things that other people might not.
It takes all kinds of people. Those seeking commercial success are funding Stencyl's development - I can respect that and kudos to them for their hard work. On my part, I have the freedom to experiment without worrying about market viability or returns on my investment. I want the "commercial" users' needs to be met so I can continue my hobby, so I actively try to support them where I can in the ways that I can.

To bring it back around, however, as a hobbyist and a busy IRL person my output is low. This unfortunately lends a perception of absence. By far, Stencyl is the best tool that I've used for what I want to do - and to teach my children about it too. I have no plans to go anywhere and I don't think Stencyl is going away either.

As an addendum; Irock mentioned Discord and while I'm a long-time IRC user I've definitely seen the benefits that Discord has and strongly encourage everyone to join us. Everyone has different time-zones but the fact that it saves chat history for easy review means you'll catch us eventually. Hope to see you there!

MdotEdot had it working on mobile, so it should be fine. Performance will depend on the device.

Also, don't use the recent code; it's definitely faulty - I'm just not sure why yet.
