Ask a Question / Create Actor On Scene Switch
« on: September 13, 2018, 03:22:49 pm »
I have some code that creates the player actor in the next scene depending on which direction the new scene is approached. For example, if leaving a scene from the top, the actor will appear at the bottom of the next scene. However, this will only work if the actors which trigger the switch are positioned at the edges of the game area.

If I want to create the player actor somewhere else than the edge of the game area, well, I've run into trouble. Maybe I've just been looking at this too long, but I can't figure it out, at least in a way that doesn't mean I have to manually create the coords for each individual scene.

Ask a Question / Any way to add a behaviour to multiple scenes at once?
« on: August 20, 2018, 05:02:10 pm »
I've suddenly realised that I need to create and attach a new behaviour to every scene in my game. Now I can't select multiple scenes when attaching a behaviour, so do I now have to do this one by one for all 150+ scenes?

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / The Lost Temple 2
« on: July 19, 2018, 05:19:59 pm » - The game is now too big to upload to the Stencyl Arcade, so it's now on gamejolt instead -

It's on newgrounds -

The sequel to the original Lost Temple (

It's still a work-in-progress. It's missing sounds and music, and some graphics (mainly background stuff, and other eye-candy)

Simple controls: ARROWS.

For the most part the controls are LEFT, RIGHT, JUMP

JUMP also functions as enter/start in the relevant situations.

Ask a Question / Collision Bug
« on: July 13, 2018, 01:36:31 pm »
I've encountered a strange bug, and I'm not sure if this has been reported yet or not. I haven't found anything.

I have a tile that acts as a trap using text data to identify it. However it's not detecting collisions correctly. If my actor moves quite quickly towards it, it triggers as though the tile collision shape covers the entire tile, but in reality the shape only covers the bottom 25%.

I can edge my actor slowly over it without triggering it. As you can see from the attached images, my actor is too wide to actually fall into the hole left by the reduced collision shape, but when moving at speed it does.

Hopefully I've explained that clearly. Thanks.

Ask a Question / Non-Exclusive Licensing
« on: June 12, 2018, 04:47:22 am »
Does anyone have experience with non-exclusive licensing? Someone has approached me regarding one of my games and has asked to know the cost for a non-exclusive license. I'm not sure what sort of figures are involved? Anyone know what to charge? Or what needs to be considered? Thanks.

Ask a Question / Stencyl 3.5 and HTML5

Does anyone have any information or idea as to when 3.5 will be released and when HTML5 support is going to be stable? Thanks.

Ask a Question / Get a single or specific collision point
« on: May 18, 2018, 06:45:46 am »
I'm trying to make an object move along a rail. Physics does part of what I want, but I need to be able to retrieve data from tiles. How would I just get the data for a single collision point that's closest to the centre of my actor? Any thoughts?

Chit-Chat / Screen Capture / GIF software for OSX

I was just wondering if anyone had any software recommendations for capturing screen video/gifs.

Ask a Question / Actors and Lists
« on: April 24, 2018, 04:30:18 am »
Actors and lists have always caused me issues. So much so, that I've always given up, but I really need to crack this.

Here's the problem broken down.

  • I have two types of actors (an unknown number of each)
  • All these need to be added to a list
  • I then need to select a random actor from that list

My main issue is adding the actors to a list in a way that I can refer to that specific actor later. Everything I've tried has caused the game to freeze.

Or is there a better way to select a random actor on screen?

Thanks in advance.

Needing some time off from my main project I started playing around and experimenting with a couple of other ideas I had, and so far, this is the result:

New version on the arcade:

Controls are ARROWS. (Left, Right, Jump. Up is also the interact key) If a jump seems impossible, try taking a run up, but note that some will be impossible to force you to take a certain route.  Those jumps are generally very obviously impossible.

As I was just trying some things out there's been no real planning, though I'm beginning to think I may expand on it.

The idea is to have linear run/jump/dodge scenes punctuated by larger scenes to explore and solve puzzles.

Currently you can't get past the first main game area.

I've put it up on GameJolt -

Ask a Question / Mini Map Help
« on: March 12, 2018, 04:28:23 pm »
I have a mini map that shows various types of actors, but I cannot figure out how to do the same for tiles.

I know that the general idea is to loop through all the possible locations and then draw blocks on the screen accordingly. I'm not even sure where to begin. I know this question has been asked before, but I haven't seen anything which helps.

Ask a Question / Calculating a value based upon a percentage
« on: February 23, 2018, 02:26:36 pm »
Another maths question from me. I'm trying to calculate the correct position for a switch on a slider bar.

The minimum value is 48, the max is 416. What are the calculations to put the switch on the bar in the right place.

Let's say the percentage is 25%, how do I convert that into a number between the numbers above? Thanks.

Ask a Question / Error 1063

Does anyone have an idea what 'Error 1063' is? I've searched, but haven't found anything useful.

Ask a Question / Image API Scene Transition
« on: February 12, 2018, 11:21:00 am »
I'm trying to figure out how to create the following effect as a scene transition:
1. Take a screenshot of the current screen
2. Switch to the next scene
3. Load the  screenshot as an image which covers the entire screen
4. Split the image into squares (Say 8 x 8px or 4 x 4px)
5. Randomly cycle through each square and clear that part of the image until the entire image has been cleared to reveal the new scene below.

Parts 1 to 3 aren't the issue, but I'm stumped on parts 4 and 5. Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Ask a Question / Can't Upload to Stencyl Arcade
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:02:21 am »
I was going to upload an update to a game on the Stencyl Arcade, but the arcade option is greyed out. I am signed in.

Any thoughts?

Nevermind, logging out and back in fixed it.
