Ask a Question / 'Save Game' blocks causing lag/freezing
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:36:16 pm »
I'm testing in Flash, and the 'Save Game' block is causing significant freezing. Is this just something to do with Flash, and on mobile, would it be okay?

Ideally I need frequent saving. I don't have many global attributes. Eight or so lists/maps with a few dozen items.

« on: January 18, 2018, 02:11:31 pm »
A game inspired by games such as Manic Miner and Dynamite Dan.

Still a work in progress, but some of the basics are there. The game isn't complete, but it's very, very close. It's just a case of continuing to test and tweak, and making minor improvements. Once I've got rid of any bugs and made it the best I think I can, I'll implement the endless mode.

Also up on Newgrounds to get feedback

The goal is a simple one; collect all the nuclear rods and then head to the exit.

Ask a Question / Controlling a Background Animation
« on: December 29, 2017, 09:16:27 am »
Would it be possible using the code block to control a background animation by just displaying one frame instead of having it loop and switching to any particular frame?

Ask a Question / Attribute Not Updating
« on: December 28, 2017, 01:23:37 pm »
I'm trying to write a value to a list, but it's not always working, and even though I've been staring at this for two days, I cannot figure it out.

There's comments in the attached image to explain my code, but here are the basics.

- The code triggers when the conditions required to win the game are met.
- The scene name is split up into a list so I can refer to the number values in it. The name format is 'Area 1 Stage 1'
- Local list attribute is set to the correct global list attribute (called 'Area 1', 'Area 2', etc.) by pulling the number from the previous list.
- The player's current score is compared to the existing one, and if it's higher, then it updates.

This works with the scene name 'Area 1 Stage 1', but not others e.g. 'Area 1 Stage 2'.  It always updates the first item in the list.

I'm completely stumped.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I've tried a different method of updating the attribute (see attached image) but still only the first item in the list updates.

Ask a Question / Setting An Attribute Automatically
« on: December 15, 2017, 12:41:09 pm »
I've run into this issue lots of times, and never been able to solve it.

See the attached image. I was hoping that I could set the list attribute 'Current Area' to a game attribute ('Area 1') automatically without having to use if/otherwise statements by taking the scene name, splitting it up into a list, then picking items from that list to set it.

How would this be done?

Anyone know the reason for the attribute not accepting a text block?

Ask a Question / Transitioning to Mobile Pitfalls
« on: November 28, 2017, 05:04:52 pm »
To the more experienced Stencyler's out there, what are the common pitfalls/hurdles/issues to consider when moving from Flash to launching your first mobile game?

Ask a Question / Useful Code Snippets
« on: November 28, 2017, 05:02:42 pm »
Would anyone care to share their most useful code snippets?

For example:
Code: [Select]
Engine.STEP_SIZE =; Used to speed the game up or down where "_GameSpeed" is a number attribute.

10 is default (100fps) A lower number speeds up the game, a higher one slows it down. 1 is minimum value.

Journals / RETREO REDUX Xapper

This was originally going to be part of my RETRO REDUX Compilation, but A) that project is large enough already and B) I thought that this might work well by itself.

I needed to step away from the compilation for a few weeks so that I could at it with a fresh pair of eyes.

It's a game of memory and concentration. A word is briefly displayed, then you must spell the word.

I'm interested to know people's thoughts, particularly regarding improvements, and in which direction to take it.

<a href="" target="_blank" class="new_win"></a>

There's two game modes; Classic, where the game becomes increasingly difficult as the words gets longer, and Endurance where you pick a word length and just keep going until you run out of time.

One thing I'm considering is replacing the time with lives.

Ask a Question / Shadow Issues / Image API
« on: November 18, 2017, 02:32:38 pm »
There's two different problems here.

Firstly, shadows on text are appearing cropped. Look at the numbers in the top left of the  attached image.

Secondly, shadows on images are also sometimes cropped, which is really confusing, because I'm using the image API. I'm grabbing an image of the actor, tinting it black, then changing the opacity  to give a drop shadow effect.

You'll see that the actor I is fine, but J is cropped.

Does anyone have an explanation and hopefully a solution?

Ask a Question / Rotate Around Point (Velocity) / Maths Help
« on: October 24, 2017, 07:58:10 am »

I have a platform that rotates around a point, but my actor won't ride the platform. It's X value stays the same, though it will move up/down.

Now, I've figured out that this is because the platform doesn't have velocity. It's XY values are just updated so physics aren't working.

So my plan is to use the velocity block with some advanced mathematics to get the platform to rotate around the point, but I'm really stuck on how to achieve this as maths isn't my strong suit (I am dyslexic!)

Any ideas? Thanks.

Ask a Question / Error #1006: get is not a function
« on: October 21, 2017, 10:03:59 am »
Has anyone got a clue as to why I might be getting this error? I know that it's to do with getting a value from a map.

I have a map that lists colours as hex values which I then convert when I retrieve them for tinting actors. No error pops up, but it wasn't working so I checked my logs and found the 1006 error.

Here's the strange thing, if I test that scene, the effect works, if I test another scene, and then navigate to the affected scene, the code doesn't work

Ask a Question / Edit Scene Properties - Tile Size
« on: September 27, 2017, 04:58:40 am »

In the Edit Scene Properties window, the tile height and width are greyed out when editing a previously created scene. Can anyone explain the reason why you can't edit these?

Ask a Question / Repeat Background in either X or Y
« on: September 09, 2017, 01:50:04 pm »
Is it possible through code to repeat a background in one direction? Or should this go as a suggestion?

Ask a Question / Seeking Feedback
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:02:03 am »

I'm seeking feedback and criticism for my current game that I will be releasing on mobile.  It's a collection of mini games. (Though some of them are not so mini.)

Here it is:

I'm keen to know what you think about all aspects of it, from the menus, the graphics, and the games themselves. (There's no sound yet)

Do the graphics work, including colour scheme?
Are the games fun?
Are they easy to pick up and understand?
What's bad, or frustrating?

Thanks in advance.

Journals / Retro Redux Compilation
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:33:37 pm »

After much toing and froing between the various ideas that I've come up with over the past 12+ months, I've finally settled on a project; a reworking of my original Retro Redux, which is being rebuilt from the ground up.

Again, this is going to be a collection of mini-games inspired by the Atari 2600.

I'm going to ditch some of the original mini-games, introduce some new ones, and rework the best ones.

I'm aiming for simple, addictive gameplay, and simple graphics.

Feedback and criticism welcomed. Thanks.
