Ask a Question / Image API - Instances not fading or disappearing
« on: April 27, 2017, 01:49:13 pm »

I have an issue with the Image API where instances are meant to fade out and then get deleted, but they don't fade, and they remain on screen. Can anyone see what the issue is? Thanks. Code attached.

Ask a Question / Maths Help, Please
« on: April 20, 2017, 02:11:52 pm »

There's a couple of effects I'm struggling to achieve with the Image API. One is an explosion particle effect, and the other is a contrail effect. I could do this easily with actors, but obviously with images there's not the same blocks.

For the explosion, I'm trying to get them to spread out from a central point, with the contrails I'm trying to make them always draw from the tips of the wings of the planes.

See the image for an explanation.

Your help is gratefully received! Thanks

Ask a Question / Two Strange Bugs
« on: April 19, 2017, 03:31:15 am »

I've run into two strange issues, and I've been unable to figure them out.

First of all I have some drawing events that draw some status bars on the edges of the screen, however, for some unknown reason they only appear AFTER an enemy has been shot.

Secondly, collision shapes for the same scene are not drawing. Most objects have collision shapes, and they appear in other scenes (even on the same actors) but not in this one scene.

I'm stumped, any help gratefully received.

Ask a Question / Image API
« on: April 02, 2017, 03:17:33 pm »
I've never really got to grips with the Image API, but I'm now determined to crack it, so if someone could help me with this issue, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not after a completed solution, but rather someone to point me in the right direction so I can finally understand it.

I'm trying to create contrails behind planes. The plane has three speeds, at the highest, the contrails should  vary in length (fade faster or slower) depending on the speed.

I can draw a trail behind the plane, but getting it to point in the same direction as the plane, or getting it to fade out eludes me.

Thanks in advance.

Ask a Question / Mathematics Help
« on: March 27, 2017, 05:41:50 am »
So, maths is a major weakness of mine.

In my game, the player can upgrade planes. A plane starts at level 1, and the level is used as the cost.

So the first upgrade costs 1 point, the second costs 2, the third 3 and so on all the way up to the max of 100.

I want players to be able to reset points at any time, but how do I calculate the correct number of points to return to the player?

Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

Ask a Question / Failed to Test Game
« on: March 27, 2017, 02:31:32 am »

This issue occurred a couple of days ago, but I've been unable to fix it.  When trying to test my game it throws an error. It shows the event that's causing the problem, but doesn't show a particular block.

Here's the error message:
Code: [Select]
Scene Code SCROLLING PAGES: Int should be String
from scripts.Design_38_38_SceneCodeSCROLLINGPAGES
line: 323
columns: 10-44

I'd replaced a few blocks with some new ones. I've marked out the bit of code in the attached image. It's approximately two thirds down the image.

Ask a Question / Limiting Decimal PLaces
« on: March 24, 2017, 03:36:26 am »
I had this issue before and had solved it, but the solution I was using no longer works. I was using:

Round VALUE x 100 / 100

That used to work fine by giving two decimal places, but it's stopped working and just gives an integer now.

Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Ask a Question / Designing for Landscape and Portrait Mode

I was just wondering if it's possible to have a Stencyl game work in both landscape and portrait modes?

Ask a Question / Large Scenes
« on: March 15, 2017, 07:18:35 am »

Let's say I had a huge scene, 1000+ tiles horizontal and vertically. Would that degrade performance? Or is it not an issue as those tiles aren't drawn?

And what about actors? Let's say I had 1000's of actors off screen and they weren't set to always update, would those be a problem?

Ask a Question / Check if an Actor Exists
« on: March 13, 2017, 04:54:07 am »

I'm trying to figure out how to properly check if an actor exists. At the moment, if a particular actor exists on screen, then all is fine. If it doesn't exist, then the game breaks. I've been using the 'Actor is alive' block for my 'Auto Shop' actor, but that doesn't seem to work.

Any thoughts to to properly implement this?

Thanks in advance.

Ask a Question / Automatic Scene Changing
« on: March 10, 2017, 12:13:19 pm »

I'm trying to figure out how to automate scene changes as I'm working on something which will have a load of scenes. My idea is to have the scene names as coordinates. See the attached picture to see an example where the scenes are laid out in a grid.

Starting at 00-00, if you travel North (up), you switch to scene 00-01, then 00-02 etc. if you keep moving North. If you travel East (right), you go from 00-00 to 01-00, so the left numbers are the vertical coordinates, and the right numbers are the horizontal coordinates.

I can sort of see the method - get the current scene name, get the two coordinates from it, then add or minus 1 from the correct coordinate and turn that into a scene name. I'm just having trouble figuring it out.

Of course, it may be that I'm over-complicating it, and there's a better, easier way to do it.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: My code already detects whether the player had exited North, East, South, West, and recreates the player in the correct location in the next scene.

Ask a Question / Move to Grid
« on: February 20, 2017, 05:26:15 am »
I'm trying to figure out how to make a player actor move to the grid. That is, slide by a set amount (say 16px) when the key is pressed, and continue sliding if the key is held down.

I've tried a few different methods but noting is working properly. The issue I'm encountering is that the player may not move by exactly 16px each time.

Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

Ask a Question / Tileset Importing Issue
« on: February 18, 2017, 03:40:12 pm »

Whenever I import a tileset, it doesn't matter what settings I use, (scale or tile size) there's a problem when I come to place tiles in the scene editor. In the image you can see the issue. The small light grey tile is the tile when placed, the darker tile is where the mouse is when trying to place a tile. The cursor placement seems stuck at 32x32 px.

Thanks in advance.

Ask a Question / Code Help, Please!
« on: February 17, 2017, 03:43:22 pm »
I'm having trouble trying to figure something out. The two important parts of my code are the attributes 'dA M' (direction of actor missile) and 'Missile' (self explanatory, the missile actor).

Now, here's the issue: I'm attempting to generate multiple missiles. It's no issue if there's a set number as I can just create attributes for each, but I want it dynamic so that there's no actual limit to the number of missiles on screen, so I need a way of generating attributes on the fly.

It's late and I'm tired, so maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I've been looking at this for a couple of days.

Thank you in advance.

Ask a Question / Checking Scale
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:19:44 pm »
How can you check at which scale the game is running? E.g. 1x, 1.5x, etc.

Thanks in advance
