Old Questions (from 1.x/2.x) / Re: 1136 pixles on iphone 5
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:39:31 am »
Hi there,

This is an issue with Stencyl 2.x
Stencyl are adding support for 1136 iPhone 5 screen in Stencyl 3.0

You can get it to work in 2.x though, as I have done for my game. (search the app store for Jimbo Jet)

Do to this you will need a mac and xcode. When you launch the game in xcode, it will let you add a 1136x640 splash image. When you add that, it automatically converts your game in to 1136 x 640 for iPhone 5.

You won't be able to do this if your testing from a windows PC.

Abandoned Bugs / Font/Label bug and another bug.
« on: January 31, 2013, 12:09:43 am »
Hi Jon.

I have a couple of bugs. The first is simple but I only tested it a few times. I created a scene with an actor that had a label. The Label displayed 'Font 1', when the user touches the screen, it should switch to 'Font 2'.

When it switched to 'Font 2', the font was just square blocks and unreadable. However, it was the exact same font as 'Font 1', just a blue instead of black. I tried making a new font and the same thing happened, even with different font properties.

I'll try attach an example later as I'm at work.

The second bug is probably specific to mac. When I press Test Game(iOS Retina), it does nothing except save it, then when I press it again, it then loads the simulator. After I close the simulator, it then loads it up again.

Thanks guys. I was asking because I've contacted someone who can possibly make an extension for 3.0 for game center turn based.

Now his original price came out at about $4000, which seems a lot. I spoke to Jon and he came up with an idea that the guy could charge per sale of the extension, instead of the community splitting the bill between interested users. (40 users at $100 each?)

I messaged the guy back about the idea and he said its an interesting idea and wondered how many Stencyl users there are.

He wouldn't start the extension until 3.0 is public, but is anyone interested in it?

Just wondered really, how many accounts have been created for Stencyl, how many of them pay for a subscription?

I did this in 2.x but it wasn't very reliable and sometimes caused a crash.

I'm trying to think how I done it.

Add a code block to the When Creating of your main scene and put this in it

[[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter]

Then make a custom event in the same scene called "pause"
and have your stencyl pause code in there.

I had this working, but the thing is that the game will only pause when you make the app Active again. E.G. You press the home button on the iphone, then open the app again and it will look like its not paused for 0.5 seconds, then your "pause" event will happen.

Okay Jon. I'll try research it a bit more and try some stuff.

Is this something you had on the 3.x road map? If so, a rough guide when? 3, 6 or 12 months time?

Edit: I'm talk specifically about just Turn Based support, that seems much easier to implement.

The point is that, with funding scenario described, if I don't pay $20, then I won't get the feature - if I do pay $20, then I will get the feature - whether or not anyone else gets the feature is not relevant to me!

HA HA! That was funny!  :D

Anyway, I was actually thinking about the multiplayer problem recently. I was looking at ElectroServer (kinda expensive) and alternatives.

I also looked at this community. There's a range of developers. It seems that there are a lot of people that have trouble parting with money. That's strange to me. (Stencyl is not that expensive and there's the potential to make a lot of money.) Maybe they don't have the money to spend. These are tough times. The point is, I doubt the majority are going to spend the money necessary to host their own multiplayer servers.

I was also thinking about Kickstarter... Kickstarter alternatives... or simply funding a multiplayer project myself.

So, I put that all together and thought... it seems like there's a need for hosting and for a way to simplify multiplayer game creation. I could probably do something to do that... and it might be a lot easier than writing a book.  :D

I think Stencyl itself should offer such a service. But since they don't... maybe I could do it.  ???

I don't know, but I think I should look into it.

Do you think you could do the turn based game center idea? I, and others would pay for this. (All I want to do is to send a String of text, then I can break the text down in stencyl to use it.

I have no clue about real coding, but could you have a look at this tutorial and see if you could implement it in stencyl?

Where did we get with this? Is anybody skilled enough to make an extension for 3.0? I would love it, and pay for it.

There's a good tutorial here ( on how to implement Game Center Turn Based, but I have no idea how to code like that.

I really want this feature.

If the community got together, how much would it cost us for you personally to make us a Game Center Turn Based Extension? With the expressed concern that there may be compatibility issues with anything less than iOS 5.0?

As you know, there's lots of interest in this type of Extension, I just haven't seen anyone willing to take on the challenge, and you know the HaXe code very well now.,16356.msg97661.html#msg97661

I would love to do this, however I really can't code. The only reason I can create anything, is because of Stencyl. I hope someone with the knowledge can make a Turn Based Game Center extension soon.

Ok Jon, I think I can do it.

The source to the existing Game Center support would be handy. I think I can send my matchData as a simple string of text/numbers, then use code in Stencyl to separate it afterwards.

I've been reading a tutorial as well, specifically this one.

I'm hoping to get it working, just need to figure out how to send Stencyl List data through Game Center as a NSdata object.

Jon, how hard would it be to implement the game center turn based api's in a stencyl game? Is it something that it planned for the near future, or will I have to start coding it myself now?

I plan on make a turn based game over the next 6 months.

What type of multiplayer are you thinking about? Synchronous or Asynchronous? I'm not sure if GC supports synchronous gaming, but it does support Asynchronous. It probably wouldn't be to hard to code yourself either with Xcode.
