Hey I spent some time experimenting with this extension (and harassing Luyren a lot) One place I ran into trouble:

1 Text file in extras folder has the text abc
2 App told to do something if text in file is abc - this works
3 App appends def to that text
4 App is to do something if the text in the file is abcdef - doesn't work.

If I have a 'when drawing' event on the scene to draw the text it updates as expected.

At this point I have a workaround but I would really love to use this extension to be able to do step 4 - if that is possible? Let me know when you have a moment, thanks!

I'm just going to answer my own question here. It does work as I expected. I remade the project and it works now. Really not sure why, but I followed the rule:

Don't forget to erase your work often.

I appreciate your work here. Thank you so much. Sadly I still haven't gotten the hang of this  :-[ I am obviously out of my depth here *cry*
At this point, my question is: is what I am trying to do actually supposed to work?

In this project, there is one text file (test.txt) saved in the Extras folder. The contents of that file is "abc" When run on android, I hope to see "abc" being appended to the text every 10 seconds. Is that supposed to work, or have I have I got the wrong idea about this extension?

Thanks just wanted to be sure.

Still same issue: I can't append text to 'test.txt' in the 'extras' folder. Very simple test game, just one scene (attached) Perhaps interesting: if text is appended when clicking screen nothing happens. If appended on a timer (after 5 seconds) the game exits. FWIW I do have an sd card attached to the device (would rather not depend on user having an sd card though) THX!!

Thank you very much! Testing on two devices with Android 5.1.1 and Android 9. I recently did a fresh install of Stencyl (Build  10558), Android SDK (via stencyl) and the JDK (8u251) No luck with that file I'm afraid. Here's what I did:

+Uninstalled previous version of the extension (deleted folders  from AppData\Roaming\Stencyl\stencylworks\engine-extensions)
+Copied the new filesave.hx file into the folder I installed the extension from (eternal-data-master.zip)
+Installed and enabled that extension
+redid the code to add text to the file as before

Thoughts? Thanks!

This could be helpful: I started testing directly from Stencyl (before I was copying the .apk file and installing) and the log has an error message.

Thanks for that. Tried the latest version. I am not getting the error but the extension still does not work as I expect. I must be doing something wrong? Could I trouble you to try this test? It's just a single scene. It exits/crashes every time I append text on Android.

Assuming it is the latest, I was getting the "Not enough arguments, expected atlasID: Int" error when compiling, so I followed some  advice down below and added another argument to the line 95. Game compiles and runs but crashes when this happens: [image attached]

I have a file named "test.txt" in the extras folder and would like to modify it. There are  no other events or behaviors in this game. edit: correction there is one "when drawing" event that is drawing the text in "test.txt"

edit 2: it crashes even without the draw event

edit 3: tested on 2 different devices with different versions of android (5 and 8 ) - both crash

Any thoughts? Thank you!!! Been at this for weeks now   :'(

Hey the latest version here says v2.0, I found another version on the Discord server called "external data 4 fix" that says v1.6 .. the one linked here is the latest yes?

(Sorry if this is necro, but wasn't sure if it was useful to make a new post for this?)

It's possible to set the duration of a specific frame (under Actors->Draw->set duration of frame)To pause an animation, you can set the frame to a very long duration. Works for my situation, hopefully this helps!
