I start with a very rough idea, to the level of "mmm, I fancy making a side scrolling shooter with aliens". Then I do some doodles, think of major game mechanics until I get a solid idea of what I plan to do. I dabble with one frame sprites and little tech demos, and tweak until it plays nicely.
Next I spend ages making graphics and messing with things and make a few solid complete looking levels. Finally comes the process of building it to a complete game, where there is much procrastination but stuff hopefully gets done eventually.
Of course all through there's lots of playtesting and messing around with little things to make it feel as polished as possible.

I love Nitrome games. The best are the ones like this that take a simple puzzle mechanic and build complex levels off of them, without ever really needing to introduce anything new, which is how puzzle games should be done IMO.

This sort of approach reminds me of Portal in some ways - All you can do is shoot two holes that are linked to each other, but there's near unlimited depth in the puzzles that that idea leads to.

Slowly finishing up Crazy Golf and starting to plan out a new game idea - a run and gun type game with some unusual mechanics, such as the weight of the weapons and items you're carrying affecting jump height and running speed.

I tried converting it to icns and adding it to Stencyl via the copy/paste method to see how it looked on a mac, and it seems a little small compared to other icons.




Very lovely otherwise though.

How would I add a hinge joint to an actor somewhere other that the centre? I am in the process of adding some more levels but want to do things like this



The red point is a hinge.

Just imagine the possibilities!

If you're anxious about a certain racing course, the game will sense that and make your screen all warped and shaky, and your controls will only work half the time! Or if you are dangerously sick, the screen will go psychedelic like a fever dream to accurately reflect how you view the world around you at that time. Or if you're in love and playing the game with the person of your affections, the screen will get rose-tinted and the game will force the in-game characters to bump into each other all the time.

Fantastic.

I actually completely seriously want this to exist

Republished with menu/restart buttons in each level and the second menu screen for the rest of the levels, although atm level 10's button just leads to level one.

On a Mac the most likely location is "Macintosh HD\Applications\StencylWorks\plaf\flash\Game.swf".

This is looking amazing, it works beautifully. Keep in mind, though, that some laptops (Such as my macbook) don't have numpads and can't be used to control player 2.

I pasted in the file from the forge version, which is fairly recent, and it works fine. I have a bit of fixing to do but it isn't too bad.

Unfortunately I don't have my logs, since I reinstalled Stencylworks attempting to fix the issue. If this comes up again I'll be sure to get the logs to you.
