Paid Work / Re: Download Stencyl source code for 5 games

Thanks for the link. Has anybody downloaded this?
Is the code good, or sufficiently organized and documented, so that it can be studied?

It's too bad, such a beautiful demo.

Resolved Questions / Re: Random Scene switch [SOLVED]
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:54:13 pm »
I think I've done this before and kept the switch to just 1 line.

If <Mouse pressed on> <start button>
Set NUMBER to [random number between 1 and 5]
Switch [Scene with name: [TEXT & TEXT]] and slide left for 0.1 secs]

The [TEXT & TEXT] block allows you to concatenate the following text segments together [Scene: ] and [[NUMBER] as text]

Please forgive me if I have a little bit of the syntax wrong, I can't open Stencyl at the moment.

Thanks Photon. That's what I thought at first, but from the article it looks like it was updated in January and at the bottom it mentions version 3.

Does anyone know if the code blocks from the rag doll would be useful to learn from for joints? Even if the program as a whole won't run in v3.

It may have not "survived" the transition from 2.x to 3.0 (in other words, it may not be compatible with 3.0.)

Resolved Questions / Ragdoll sample app missing? [SOLVED]

I can't find the Ragdoll test app on Stencylforge.
I want to learn about joints. I assume this is the best example available.

Shared Resources / Re: Eye Candy Pack (update)
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:45:48 pm »
Eye Candy is great to use, but hard to learn from!

Usually I r-click on behaviors to show the actor/scene using it. But in this game many of the behaviors say 'none.'

For example, I almost gave up trying to figure out how the Mambo explosion events are triggered in this "game" For newer players go to the scene, click on the specific Mambo in question and then go to the Inspector mode on the right and you'll see an area to customize behaviors for a specific actor.

Do people use this feature frequently? (using the scene to customize a behavior to a specific instance of an actor type.)

I also like your first sample Boss theme - STaGP by Prehistoric Software.

Your fourth sample, BossTheme, is an interesting (also weird) combination of multiple themes. The first (from about 1-11 seconds) reminded me instantly of Road Runner ACME scenes, the second (12-26 seconds) sounds like Star Wars/space opera, back to ACME (27-34 seconds), then Warcraft (35-54 seconds), then back to ACME, etc.

Within a game, one scene I think these constant switches would come off as a little discordant...however, if the transitions were a little smoother and longer, this kind of track could be used as part of a trailer to showcase a game that has contrasting scenes. For obvious reasons, you might also consider expanding each of the three styles you have here into separate tracks.

Good job. You might want to consider taking a video of an existing game (whether recording it yourself, or taking someone else's recording), replacing the sound with your own, and posting on YouTube. That might help people see this kind of music in context and help them appreciate your skills. (That would include both in-game and trailers/opening sequences.)

Good luck.

Stencyl still doesn't launch v2.1 after Disk Utilities repaired permissions, half were related to Java. Do I need to revert Java to 1.5? Based on google/stackflow, this does not seem trivial.

Thanks for your patience, I'm still new at the Mac thing.

Ask a Question / Can't install v3 or v2.1 Help!
« on: September 14, 2013, 07:24:08 pm »
I downloaded/installed v3 and v2.1 a half-dozen times over 3 hours this evening on a Macbook (2006). Stencyl always quit on launch after one bounce. Is this related to server issues? Can anyone help? (I'll try again tomorrow.)

FYI, Apple Genuises erased the Macbook and installed Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I installed Firefox no problem. Could also be user error, my mac experience is limited. Thank you.

Game Art / Re: What animation software do you all use?
« on: September 14, 2013, 04:36:42 pm »
In most sprite sheets I've seen on the web, the spacing between the character animation frames is extremely variable. I assume it's to reduce the file size, and in a game it could reduce the space required in the atlas. I've tried importing frames of different sizes and the end result is generally a disaster. Does anyone use variable size actor frames in Stencyl? And how would you display the frames properly?

Open up an existing game with the font, right-click the font, and export it. In your new game import that file. I just tried it and it worked.

I don't think I need help, all I need with StencylForge is my favorite font I always use. I hope its up soon! By the way, the font, is called Arcade Black.

Ask a Question / Re: Stencyl database connecting (tutorial series)
« on: September 09, 2013, 02:29:56 pm »
It is definitely something that I am very interested in.

My needs are rather simple and so I've found this API for Google Docs spreadsheets that lets to read/write from Stencyl using GET/POST blocks. I haven't done it yet, but it looks doable without too much difficulty. If it is as simple as what is in my head, it might satisfy what some Stencylers want without going the php route.

Ask a Question / Re: What to Tween (using custom code Tweener)?

I'm curious in which circumstances you want to tween an actor in code when you have blocks for that. I'm always looking to learn new things. Thanks

In case you didn't see my message in the Stencylforge thread,,24950.0.html, Abigayl's video tutorials will more than occupy you while Stencylforge is down. (If you can't follow her tutorials, Stencylforge isn't for you yet.) Make sure to review her summary of the small GUI changes that have been made to Stencyl since she made the videos.
