Ask a Question / Advise on player to block collision please :)
« on: August 09, 2011, 04:58:31 pm »
Hi all, I spent the last two days getting a really tricky part of my game working that involved sounds all playing in time with background music. What I found is it takes me 3 or 4 attempts to get things working because I keep coming at things from the wrong angle.

SO, to counter that this time I'm looking for some advise on how to do the next bit & hopefully that'll save me some time tomorrow.

I have a platform game style set up. A player that runs around and four boxes on the screen (that are also actors). I'd like my player to jump up on box 1 and hold down a button for 2 seconds and this will change the state of box 1 and then the player to do a similar thing with box 3.

How do I go about setting up the Is player touching (just the) top of box 1 collision and then on button press change a state within box 1 and box 1 only?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated for when I take a proper crack at it tomorrow  8)

These are really great! Easy to follow as they are recorded at such a high resolution, I'm getting used to the accent now ^^ where are you from Sunrisekingdom?

Ahhhh.... I see! Let me try and fix that!

Edit: Hmm.. now I don't know where to put the 'set direction right' code. Maybe it will be best to write my own 8-way that just does what I need.

Edit2: So, I've moved the 'set direction right' code up above "if not 8-direction" and it still not working. If I check check Right and leave the next bit as otherwise it always fires left. If I also add a If 'set direction left' - the bullet just freezes.

Right, I tried to used the 'direction' attribute and its making things really messy. I'm using the 4-way behaviour and a shooting behaviour I made called Fire.

I've attached a screenshot below.

Currently it always fires to the left (-70). Do I set up the direction attribute just for the4-way behaviour?

I'm a bit lost now :'(

Can I piggyback on this thread as its pretty much the same thing.

I'm making a shmup and the ship idles a lot. So I have it firing to the right but am struggling with firing to the left. How do I detect if the ship is facing left or right but not necessary with the key being pressed down?

This looks good to me but I don't understand how to make the '<if direction = right>' line in Design Mode...

{Always}
    <if key is pressed>
        [create bullet actor at (x,y)]
        <if direction = right>
            [set x-speed of last created actor to (number)]
        <otherwise>
            [set x-speed of last created actor to [negate (number)]

Hello all, thanks for the feedback so far.

In the end I downloaded Screen Wrap from the forge and hardwired in the x coordinates, also removed the y coordinates. Its actually not bad and will do for now :)

Thanks for your help, if anyone cracks the seamless screen wrap please PM me!  8)

Yep, I've found the previous similar request. It doesn't really answer the question. Funny, Defender is 31 years old - and I can't work out how to recreate its tech  :-[

So, I've had a little play and realise its the SCENE that needs to wrap and not the background. Much like the arcade classic Defender...

http://youtu.be/GdUlS_cSMoE

The screen will scroll forever in one direction but the same scene and enemies will loop over and over.

Is this possible?

I have the background set to repeat - perhaps I have another behaviour stopping that? Maybe one of the camera or actor behaviours. Thanks! I'll have a look into it, I thought I was going crazy as I'm sure it was working earlier and wrapping around.

Yeah I found out the hard way about the size limit as originally the background size was 9600 x 640 and Stencyl was flipping out whenever I tried to run it, good to know the actual hard limits, so thanks again.

Ask a Question / Wrapping the background/scene around?

Hi all,
So I'm making a game that a little like Fantasy Zone on the Master System. Here's a link for you youngsters!
http://youtu.be/SyqrEydoemU

The the whole level is about 10 screens across and it wraps; if you go off one end you seamlessly come back around on the other.

I have a background that's 4800 pixels by 320 and a screen size that's 480 x 320. I can get it to scroll just fine but am a bit of a loss (VERY new to Stencyl) how to make this wrap around into a perfect loop like the Fantasy Zone example,

Any help would be appreciated  8)

Hello, thanks for the welcome :)

So I've found the Help location: C:\Users\User\Documents\StencylWorks - which is in HTML, anyway I can compile this better so all the pages flow one after the other and it prints out that way?

I'm thinking about doing this manually at the moment but its going to be pretty time consuming, any one think of an easier way?

EDIT:
So, I took the Help folder and used some HTML to PDF converter and it's squished the whole thing into a .pdf. Then I downloaded everything from the Stencylpedia; htmls and graphics and squished that to a .pdf also. Bit messy as the categories aren't in perfect order etc but once printed out I can fix some of that up. At least I have something to read at work next week  8)

Hi,
Anywhere I can find a printable version of Stencylpedia & StencylWorks Help? I'd like to make notes as I go along and also, it gives me something to read at work ;)

I can't see a Print function on Stencylpedia and I'm not too sure where the StencylWorks Help file is kept. Any clues?

Ta.
