Positive:
* Nice splash screen
* good controls

Negative:
* too much on the start screen. Do a status page afterwards
* no 'tutorial' levels .. easy start

Advice:
Start simple.
One objective, no objects that try to kill you.
Teach the user how to survive... So what should we do with O2 what effects your health otherwise .. introduce hit .. give a (visual) warning signal when you are close to bad objects.

Thanks, you raise some good points. Much appreciated.

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / New Game: Dive!
« on: May 05, 2016, 06:32:19 pm »
Hi all,

I've just released a new game and would really appreciate a little feedback on it.

You must dive to recover lost treasure and catalogue creatures. It's complete, except for the sounds (there's currently none as it was too big to upload to Stencyl with sounds.)

I'm interested to know if there's any bugs I've missed, or if the balance of costs/upgrades etc. needs tweaking. Thank in advance.

Ask a Question / Re: Question about masks

I forgot to mention that when you're in scene view,  you can apply blending effects to layers too.

I found a really good tutorial on this here: http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2014/05/23/create-a-destructible-terrain-with-stencyl-3-1-image-api/.

It seems that my images may be the problem. The author of that tutorial had problems with images created using certain software.

Any thoughts on how I would develop his example into a flashlight effect? I've got it so part of the image is removed, but it doesn't get covered again when the mouse moves.

Hi Michael,

I'm still quite new to Stencyl so I'll offer what help I can.

Blend modes can be found under ACTORS > EFFECTS. You'll need to experiment with the different blend modes to see how they interact as it's difficult to try and explain what they do. I was playing around blend modes initially to create a torch/flashlight effect. It didn't work for what I wanted, though it may work for what you need.

The Image API may also be useful to you. There's a good tutorial I found on the Image API here http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2014/05/23/create-a-destructible-terrain-with-stencyl-3-1-image-api/.

I hope this helps.

Version 3.4.0Beta2

I did originally try using a PNG. When that didn't work I tried a JPG.

Hi meraak and yoplalala,

No joy in either case I'm afraid to say.

For the sake of testing, they're just two very basic images. See attached. They're both being found in the 'extras' folder, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

You can use the Image API. Set up a black rectangle and use the "clear image using mask" block. The effect is the same.

But there's something to be said for simplicity. The actor method is simpler to set up and might be more efficient. (I haven't tested that, though...) A good reason to use the Image API over a shadow actor is to implement multiple light sources.

Thanks merrack,

The reason i wanted to avoid the simpler method is that I want the effect to be upgradable by the player (increasing the size of the flashlight), and using the occlusion method would either result in lots of large images, or I may have run into problems if I resized them on the fly.

I'm definitely close to getting "clear image using mask" to work, but I'm not there just yet. Any further help gratefully appreciated. Here's the code and game export.

EDIT: Just to clarify the problem I'm having; the black rectangle loads fine, but the mask isn't working for some reason.

Ask a Question / A better way to create a torch/flashlight effect?
« on: April 30, 2016, 01:04:23 pm »
Hi,

I'm aware that this question has been asked many times before, and I've searched through the solved solutions, but they all  suggest creating a torch/flashlight the same way; using a large actor with a transparent circle that follows the actor. This seems like a rather clumsy way of doing it, and results in using very large actors.

This is what I want to do: http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/4158

Is there not yet a way to do this using layers and blending? Thanks in advance.

I got the suit, but the airlock still tells me I'd need a suit to enter.

The airlock is a red-herring. I'll change the text.

yup, doesnt add suit to inventory.

You've been unable to pick up the suit? Once you've fixed it, click it again to collect it.

i love these kind of games, but of course im stuck :/

the key card was very difficult to find on the first scene for me,

you have a small bug on the spacesuit, its showing two lines of text at once  "somebody damaged it" and when i select an item (i.e. the resin) and click on it, it says "somebody damaged it" and something else together.

i did something in the farm (dont wanna spoil), i left the room and now i cant re-enter, so i guess im stuck :(

Thanks for playing! And thank for the comments. You should always be able to reenter the farm, so that's definitely a bug. I'll fix it ASAP.
