An image instance will display far too large (twice as big) when attached to either the screen or a layer in 3.5 Using build 9703, testing both desktop and Flash. Sample game attached.

By default, images attached to the screen scale up based on the engine scale.  If you do not want this you can turn off "Autoscale Images" in the Settings > Settings > Advanced.

Agreeing with rob1221's assessment.

Currently all images are treated as 1x source images. Eventually we should also allow an image to be treated as a 2x/3x/etc source image so that it doesn't scale at all if it's being shown at that scale.

Another thing: we should have a "scale changed" event that allows you to reconfigure all of the onscreen image instances if you want. So you can always display the proper image for the current scale, and not be left with an automatically resized image that may not look so great.

I thought it was good practice to generate different version of images used for each resolution then use the correct image for the correct scale device rather than scale them. This process is laborious at the  moment, maybe having a way of adding images that generates scaled versions and adds them to the assets folder would be an idea? Even better, maybe the different resolutions could be placed in the correct folders so that app thinning on ios works and the resolution images not needed aren't downloaded to that device (i think this already works for actors image assets).
