GS versus Stencyl thread at Gs forums !! (and went on many tangents)

I have used GS for about 8 months.

I'll only use it to update the two games i have already completed there.

They ARE *that* slow...

IAP,Joints,Tables, GC Acheivements, other stuff... all were slotted to be out in SEP/OCT... IAP and Tables made it out in mid DEC... and the Tables are READ ONLY!

they had an ipad splash screen bug for months!

i foresee SW leaving GS in the dust.

What country are you in, Mr. Paul?

Oh, and I don't see why the 20 fps reduction is so bad. I only get 20-30 fps in most flash games, and they run very smoothly for me.

As for the istencyl price, hell yeah it's expensive! I think Jon is slightly overpricing it at $150 - that's $250 for iStencyl and the apple developer license. If it were $50-75,  or even $100, I'd pay for it.
I'm from Uzbekistan (placed between Russia and China)
Prices for istencyl not so high, I just need to open viza. But I must to make reserve 200$(freeze) on this card for it, than 100$ for apple account, 150$ for iStencyl, 900$ for iPad, and min 1500$ for computer with iOS. And most important thing, even if I will publish my game and earn some money I don't how I will get it here... Because in Uzbekistan I can't get money on viza from juridical persons espessially in dollars... So it's only my situation with puplish to the apple store.
In all I satisfied with Stencyl work and I want to pay for creators more than just 150$, I just don't know how to publish game.
For me 40 fps too slow, I have dynamic camera and it's require at least 50 fps for smooth working

Gamesalad is out of range for me. I'm pretty sure it requires an Intel Mac, plus I can't see myself really making iPhone games for cash anytime soon (Especially with the furbies. My personal favorite thing is not for commercial use unless it's the folks that originally made the furbies in the first place... or whoever handles them).

You don't need an ipad, nor do you need a mac. Overall, you just need to spend $150 on the iStencyl license and $100 on the apple developer license - overall, $200.

How to test without device?

Perhaps there wouldn't be so many of these if the documentation were a bit better. Stencyl is great, but like ay powerful tool,it requires comprehensive documentation.

I've been trying to fix that problem too!   :)

Maybe I'd get more work done on that textbook if I avoided forum debates.   :D

Obviously I think StencylWorks is better than GameSalad. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here. With GameSalad, it's a cycle of waiting and disappointment. The Stencyl team seems faster at development and responding to issues. I also like the tone of this community. It's more relaxed, not so competitive, and Jon has shown great leadership.

I think it's better to ignore this drama and get busy making apps!

You could use the simulator, but I don't recommend just that. The game should be tested on actual iOS hardware. You could just have a closed beta. Lots of people on the Touch Arcade forums like to test iOS games... but look for trusted testers, or your game might get ripped off.

As I understand, simulator working only on mac os? I plan to make large and complex game for iPad, about 100mb, so that is why need to have target devise and mac computer because I will need to make too many tests... And again, it's only make case. iStencyl rules without doubts!

You do need a Mac to upload to iTunes connect I believe. You have to use the application 'app loader'

When I started with Mac Development almost three years ago, I decided to get a Mac. It wasn't an easy decision. Also, I wasn't crazy about spending money on a testing device. Yet, these were basic tools for my work.

The iOS Simulator is Mac OS X software. So, it looks like you're in a tough spot. I don't know what the best decision is for you. Only you should decide if buying a Mac and a testing device is worth the risk.

It was a risk for me to buy a Mac. Money was tight back then and I couldn't go wasting it. I think it worked out for me though. Today, my main phone is an iPhone and my main computer is a Mac Mini.

Thank You Michael for the advises. I can spend 2 000 or even 5000 $ on this devices, this is good investment, I know. Problem in next, i can't get money on visa. I have only one variant, tо get money trough western union, and I suppose apple not support it...
But, I'm working for couple of years, with one US corporation, they created soft and publish games, this company made "Impulse" application that GameStop using now for their digital distribution, so, i can work with this company, but I need good quality exe application for them. So, that is why I'm waiting for ability to export to native .exe.
I'm sure, iOs will be my next step, but I need some start point, and iOs almost closed for me in this time.

I used gs only once, then I saw someone on the forums complaining about support and many other things, the team gave a damn about the complaints. I decided I would not spend a dime there.
a user mentioned stencyl in the thread, and it was then that I knew this tool.

but what made me decide to not use gs was my viewpoint as a player. I have many games on my ipod, all run very well. but I downloaded the games that are on showcase of gs and got frustrated. all are very slow and takes several minutes to even start.

Today, in addition to not use gs, if I know that a game was made on it I keep away.

You could use a hackintosh.
Yeah, it's illegal, but if you were to buy a mac OSX disc and then get an illegal copy, I don't think you should be punished. Besides, I doubt they'd catch you with the millions of other hackintoshes there are. :D if I had a 2 TB hard drive, hell, even I'd run a hackintosh.

Personally I think a lot can be summed up about GS in the fact that they charge $500 for a piece of beta software. I get the feeling at this point that the Beta tag is relatively arbitrary, but the mere fact that the continue to insist on calling it beta, is not only scary but odd.

I think the biggest advantage Stencyl has right now is speed to market. GS updates take forever, if it continues that way Stencyl will be worlds ahead in less than 6 months time.

That Kongreate thread really upsets me. There's the air of "you must be a good programmer in order to make quality games"

What is that nonsense? I'm not a programmer, I'm a designer, so by that logic I can never make good games? Such a ridiculous mentality. I almost have to laugh because they reckon that being a programmer elevates you to some magical super star status.

The reality is that it really makes litter difference what the tool is, a good designer/developer will make quality stuff, whatever.
