Basically, I'm thinking of creating something like my GameSalad textbook, but with interactive examples. The last few days have been rough. I know what it's like to write a book, so I'm wondering if I really want to pull the trigger on this project. It's something of a New Years resolution. Either I'm going to finish this project or just shut up about it.  :D

I've been reading your reviews/comparisons on GameSalad and Stencyl and I'm highly impressed with the detail and time that you put into these projects.  I'm guessing that a textbook on Stencyl 3.0 would be very well received, if it's release were to coincide with the official release of Stencyl 3.0.  Would that be enough time for you to finish?

Stencyl 3.0 is expected to be released in January. Unless he is mostly complete with the book, it's not likely. There's a lot of content to cover when teaching Stencyl, and it takes a fair amount of time to write something of quality.

But we have a Stencyl 3 book by Innes :)

Wow! It looks like there's a sale... $5 for the ePub. That's nice.

Hi! Thanks for the nice comments!  :D

I'm not sure when (if?) the book will be done. I'm not trying to rush it. I hit a major problem this week. I wasn't happy with the performance of Flash files in PDFs and the HTML5 files won't run locally. That's a major issue for building interactive files. I have an idea around this problem, but that idea definitely rules out Kickstarter.

I'm still excited about Stencyl and Kickstarter though.

I feel Stencyl would get so much funding, support and publicity if it became a kickstarter (maybe 4.0?)

Well, maybe there should be a Kickstarter for an add-on... like a real-time multiplayer plugin? There was some work on Electrotank for Stencyl. http://community.stencyl.com/index.php?topic=4886.0

I've been thinking of creating a turn-based add-on for Stencyl games in Drupal. That could be a good Kickstarter project. The modules for Drupal are usually Open Source, but couldn't the add-on in Stencyl could be paid? Maybe that could be the reward in Kickstarter.

It doesn't have to be just Drupal. Maybe it could be WordPress too.

I'll have to rethink the Kickstarter idea for the book. After reading your reply, I felt sad about giving up on the Kickstarter idea. Maybe there still is a way to make this project work.

Maybe just link to examples on GitHub or on your website.  You could also publish the entire book in HTML and host it behind a paywall on your own website.  An interactive book sounds great!

It's nice to see these encouraging posts.  :D

I'm still messing around with PDF settings. I might be able to make this work. If I do turn the book project into a Kickstarter project, I want to be sure that my idea actually works. I thought it did when I first started the project, but it seems that something might have changed.

But as for the Kickstarter idea, as a way to promote Stencyl, I saw this page...
http://www.stencyl.com/help/view/how-to-create-engine-extension/

It seems that the Extension Ideas could be a good Kickstarter project.

  • Dialog System
  • Web Views
  • Video
  • Gamepads
  • Push Notifications
  • Data Structures (Dictionary, Trees)
  • P2P Multiplayer / Networking
  • Google Analytics

(I'm not a fan of Google Analytics... I like Piwik.)

Couldn't one... or all ...of these ideas be rolled into a Kickstarter project? I was thinking of making the book with Stencyl, using a Web View, which is how I stumbled on the Engine Extension page. I smiled when I saw the Multiplayer / Networking listing. It seems that there could be a demand for this kind of stuff.

ugh.. so your saying the beta is you have to pay but real version is free. Also in Stencyl 3.0 you
should add multiplayer support.

Yeah Jon, why don't you add multiplayer? Isn't it like just putting [import multiplayer] in code or something?
stop asking for multiplayer and 3D

For those wondering, we're waiting on the OpenFL devs (again) to fix their sound implementation for mobile.
Quoting myself just to say we're still waiting for the fix :(

Let's bribe them with coffee and chocolate.

I don't know what you're talking about, seems like nothing but an innocent line to me.
