Audacity is a great tool, but not for synth and midi. There's a learning curve, but I would recommend SunVox

Garageband is very very cheap for the features and instruments you get.

Their manual page really helped me understand how to use Audacity. Although if you need more in depth teach I would recommend some time on Youtube to find some good tutorials.

Here is that page for the manual they offer ---> http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/tutorials.html

Hope that helps :D

If you have an android phone you could use nanoloops, its not going to be better than the already suggested programs but it only takes a few minutes to learn, which is why I use it.

For my music I use GarageBand on the iPad. It's not free but it's amazing and easy to use for just 5 bucks.

Garageband is Mac only for computers.
If you have an ipad, go for garageband. But if you don't have an ipad, don't get one just to use garageband.

I agree. Also the Garageband on mac is just mixing loops unless you really know how to use it. If music for your games is what you want, you could just get it off StencylForge or royalty-free music websites. I recommend MetalRenard (StencylForge) and KungFuFurby (StencylForge and has hundreds of tracks on the forums). Hope this helped.

That's all you can do? Can't you change the note pitches using those little dots on the bottom? I used it a bit last year in school, and I think I might be using it in a class coming up this year.

Yikes, have to disagree, Garage band is definitely not just mixing loops! ;)

Like any program, there is a learning curve, but do you know that you can plug in digital 8 bit coders to make retro game music? I love that feature!
