I also like Corel Graphics Suite X3 when it comes to paid software, but I've been trying to go the free route just on principle to show it's possible to make great stuff without it costing a great deal (or requiring software piracy).

I usually get a picture of what I want from Google Images, make the background transparent in Photoshop, then shrink them to the right size.
