First stab at pixel art/main character for 8-bit game.

After some words from you guys at the forum I thought I would just give it a go at creating something.

It would be a kin to 8-bit Mega Man, with the respawing enimies, stupid difficulty and holy chip tune music, but before all that I need to know how the main character looks?

Please be honest, I tried my hardest and want to know how I did.

He looks good and definitely fits that kind of style. Though, he's not using an 8-bit palette or following the 8-bit's limited color count if you're going for authenticity.

Perhaps we should have an art/creativity forum to distinguish between people's personal works and actual resources to help others.

I couldn't find out what the 8-bit palette was, which I wanted to use. Mind telling me it?

For 8-bit game it really rocks, but you should shade shirt and pants a bit using smart positioned black pixels. And Blob, there wasn't only one 8-bit palette. There was NES Palette, Atari palette, etc. Maybe he made his own? For limits - some consoles, while stays 8bit had bigger color count than NES, thus bigger limits.

And yes, Art/creativity forums is GREAT idea.

There are no impossible things. There is only lack of skills.

I like to use the NES 8-bit palette.

Here's the Wikipedia page if you ever need to grab it again.

Sprites typically are limited to 3 colors and transparency only, though you'll notice some games (such as Megaman) manage to cheat around that and have up to 5 colors and transparency. Your sprite currently has 6 colors and transparency.

@Darkhog he just said he didn't use an 8-bit palette.

EDIT: Thanks Jon.

Ahaha thanks man, I think I will go total retro and use only 3 colours, but now I'm stuck on what to use!

Edit: I don't know how to get it down to 3/5 colours!

Here's my attempt at a 5-color version if it helps.

(uses NES palette)

EDIT: and here's my attempt at a 3-color version.

(the blue could be any other color)

References are always good when you're trying to achieve a look in that vein. Right now, your sprite seems to be going for a Mega-Man like look.

If you're emulating a certain game style, try looking it up and taking inspiration from those.

Hmm, a suggestion for the future, when you're a little bit more practiced, is to try and come up with more interesting character design. It's your main character, so you want to make him stand out a little bit more than others. You're just starting out though, so that may be asking too much.

I am going for a Megaman style game and did use him as a reference.

Do you think he would make a suitable main character anyway?

Whoops, I should really read more. Sorry 'bout that. You definitely got the look down though. :]

Right now he seems a tad bland, maybe give him something on his shirt or use a different kind of color scheme. A helmet perhaps? If you really don't mind how it looks now, the character looks nice, he's fine for a game.

Made a few versions of my own. (Using the great NES palette Blob posted)

1. Gave your character a more dynamic pose, switched colors.
2. Original color scheme version.
3. Tossed all NES restrictions out the window. Basically, my take on the character with no limits. (Okay, not without limits, but it's me thinking more freely. You get the idea.)

Hope this gives you some ideas!

Don't get down on yourself like that, it takes practice. :]

Remember, you're still a complete beginner. Trust me when I say that your first sprite looks better than a lot of first attempts I've seen through the years. <shudder>
