2 months almost? That's quite a lot of time to come up with something properly awesome.

Cheers Jon, will get to work :) This will be fun, and it's always nice to see what comes out of the other end of a jam.

The interesting thing is I think Jon said you may submit multiple entries. By that logic, you could submit 2 games by making games in 1 month or 3-4 games by making games in 2-3 weeks. Whether anyone would actually do that though is yet to be seen. But he did say from past experience a lot of good jam games are made in the span of a couple weeks. :)

Personally, I may already have a solid idea, and if I can solidify and code the fundamentals of the game in the next week here, I will probably end up going with that. I already jotted down a lot of ideas but I really like this one. It will definitely be a lot of work though, but with 2 months and the proper amount of discipline, I hope I can make it work. It's why I want to see if I can do some of the heavy logic here in the first week so I can be confident that it won't cripple development later.
Do NOT PM me your questions, because I likely will not respond. If I have replied to your question on the forum, keep using that topic. Thanks!

Winners from the previous Game Jam

Here are the winning entries from the previous Game Jam to give you an idea of where the "bar" is for a good game jam entry.

What bar?

A little more progress on my platformer since the announcement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzQlZaI6e_Q
A lot more of my own tile sets, new backgrounds, animations, and trying to incorporate more behaviors. Hope I can pull it together in time!

We're going by the honor system here, and I'm not going to strictly define what a "new" game is. After hosting a bunch of jams in the past, I find that most game jam entries, including the winners, tend to be completed in the span of a week or two.

If hassled, I'd say that a game whose content is beyond "half done" is stretching it. So it's OK if you have a demo with just the base mechanics finished, but not OK if you submit a 60 level game where you've already completed 30 levels.

I'm a little confused here. It's ok to submit either completed games or incomplete games? The game I would like to submit I begun major development on last week. If I can finish it before 4/30, it will be eligible?

Also, are there any stipulations about art, like, do you have to create all art from scratch or is it ok to use found and edited sprites?

Thanks! Really looking forward to this!

As the post states, you must submit a complete game. What you have stated is eligible.

The post you are quoting is talking about cases where people have mostly finished their game. It is *not* about submitting incomplete games.

IMO, if you're unsure of if your game qualifies, explain the background of the game when you submit it. That's what I'm going to do. Then, the judges can decide for themselves if it qualifies or not.

Don't you think that, after all that work, waiting until the last moment to realize your game doesn't qualify sounds like a bad idea?

I have another question though. If for some reason our game ends up getting too big for the arcade, can we make the swf downloadable from elsewhere instead? I seriously don't know if that will happen, but I feel with the work that could go into this game of mine it is a valid concern.

While the prizes are pretty decent for winning, it's nothing compared to the potential from a possible sponsorship if your game is good enough to win. While there are exceptions of course (and for those people, having a better explanation is certainly beneficial since I too am rather lost with the hazy line that's been drawn), for those of us doing the contest as an "extra", it doesn't matter to the same degree. To provide background is a back-up plan, not a primary one, but with the lack of clarity, it's likely one that many of us will need to utilize.
