Thanks for buying the book!

Turn back just a few pages and read again from the heading, "Examining screen size and scene size" and especially review the wide screenshot of the game showing the 1920 pixel-wide scene, with the 640 pixel-wide dotted rectangle overlaid. The key words are 'scene' and 'screen'; it's important to understand the difference between the two in order to make sense of the sentence that you highlighted.

Once you have read through it again and reviewed the image, let me know if it still doesn't make sense, and I'll be happy to find a different way to explain it.

Best regards,
Innes

Thank you! That just didn't click for me the first time. Reading that and looking at the image gave me my "Eureka!" moment. ;D

I'm really enjoying working through the book! You explain things that even an imbecile like me can understand!

I hope that it's not impertinent of me to ask if there will ever be a "Intermediate Level" follow up, to help explain things like Lists, Custom Blocks etc... for us non-programmer/thicko types.

Anyway, thanks for the help and I really do recommend the book to anyone who is starting out on their game creating journey!

Hello! I just bought my copy of Learning Stencyl 3.x  and I am currently working on "time for action - displaying the game over banner" I had trouble making the Game Over Banner work because there is an error on instruction no. 7 and 8. I think you meant to add a trigger event block on event Collides with Enemies in the actor behavior Manage Player Collision not on event Show Angel in the actor behavior Health. If I am wrong please let me know.

Hi all,
I'm new here and trying out Stencil. IS this book applicable to Stencyl 3.3.2 or do I need another source(s) to learn about the latest features as well?

Hi, the vast majority of the book still applies to the current version of Stencyl.

I think the main Changes relate to fonts (which is minor) and backgrounds / foregrounds, which are now treated as layers, which is more intuitive.

If anyone wants to point out any other differences, please feel free to comment.

The vast majority of the book relates to logic and other issues which are not version-dependent. The book is still selling very well, and I'm not aware of anyone providing feedback about the book not being applicable to the current version of Stencyl.

There is a newer Stencyl book available, by a different author, but the styles and goals of each book are very different. It's probably worth going on Amazon.com and reading the reviews before making your mind up. Obviously, I am biased towards my book!

Thank you Innes for the reply. I see you have an extensive  course on Udemy. Is that more current and how does it compare to your book?

Thanks

The course is more up-to-date, but there are still some minor changes to Stencyl since I created the videos. Of course, you can always on the forums if you need help!

You learn to create a complete game in the video (different to the one in the book), but I would probably say the book is more detailed. They're just different ways of learning. If you're interested in following the course, I'll post up a link to a discounted enrollment ($15).

The course is still very popular, and I continue to get good feedback.

I have the book and am working my way through it. I've downloaded the accompanying files from Packt, but none of them match the progress of the book. For instance the last file from chapter 2 is just the very early stage of the game, without the progress that was made in the chapter. Is there any way I can get the correct files please?

Hi,

I'm a bit puzzled; the files have not been changed since the book was published.

I'll try to have a look as soon as I can, but if someone else can have a quick look, I'd be grateful.

I've also found that several of the files won't run because of errors. Could this be because I'm using a later version of Stencyl and the book files have to be converted before running the test?
