Boss 101 - Post Mortem (and general Stencyl thoughts)

The short story:
I'm working on a new game called Boss 101. You might have guessed already but it's a game where you ONLY fight bosses/boss battles! I like to think of it as Pacific Rim meets Adventure Time. Ambitious, huh?!?! HAHAHA!

It’s early but I wanted to give the Stencyl Community the VERY FIRST public look at what’s going on. I have the feeling most people here can appreciate the blood, sweat and tears one puts into a labor of love. Bear with me – it’s a long post if you want to read it all!

FIRST - you can now play the demo here on this site...

The slightly longer story:
Boss 101 is designed to be about fun gameplay with short, easy to get into rounds. It’s a side scrolling shooter and the idea is for people invest 2-3 minutes of time a round. There are gun upgrades, a store for dress up items and decoration as well as a constant stream of boss variations. Additionally – there is constant dialog between the player and the main characters.

At the heart of the game is the boss creator. A fully procedural way to create new bosses from a pool of heads, bodies and weapons. With over 100 of each to choose from there is little chance the player will get the same game over and over. Additionally the dialog system is designed to keep the players interested in what’s going on with the main characters Max (your alter ego) and STEVE (the jetpack). The game doesn’t take itself too seriously and regularly breaks the fourth wall with the player to keep the mood light and the pace interesting.

Basic Ideas:
•   Short rounds designed to be fun, challenging and varied.
•   Varied commentary between STEVE, Max and the bosses
•   Fun looking characters and settings to battle in. Constant stream of new enemies and situations
•   Layered gameplay - not too hard for casual pick up and play.
•   101 levels, 101 bosses to beat, collection and upgrades throughout
•   A procedural system to allow for millions of variations including a chicken headed samurai robot.

Some screens from development

The current Make a Boss screen (the demo has an early version)

A portion of the upgrade panel

One of the first gameplay screenshots from the Android version

Gameplay with STEVE and Max getting slammed by rockets

Gun Upgrades include the mighty Fist Cannon

Rounds always start with some banter between Max, STEVE and the boss

Bosses talk too

Here are some examples of the kinds of bosses you might randomly roll

A Monkadactyl on a rampage

The Triceracluck firing rockets

Winged Dogasaur

BrontaDogasaurus. Very tough, very slow and VERY hard to kill!

One of the Seven Samurai Bots with side splitting sword action…

Plot (if you're still reading):
You are Max, a teenager who finds an alien jetpack and ends up saving the world by accident.

Aliens landed on Earth and are taking over cities across the world. They've created what they think are the most feared bosses of all time. Mechanical dinosaurs, robot samurai, and even domestic cat and dog bosses. Armed with alien tech, kitty missiles and water balls they are daring the human race to come and reclaim what it rightfully owns.

Their ultimate goal is conquest but they didn’t count on one of their own rebelling and joining the Earthlings. Unfortunately for Earth, the robot to leave was the least liked, most sarcastic of all, a robot named STEVE.

STEVE makes his way to Earth and teams up with Max. From there they go around to various overrun cities and start taking out the bosses. Using the captured boss brains they build an Ultra Gun (so powerful it destroyed Earth’s second moon) to defeat the last, most fearsome of the robots – Boss 101.

My backstory
I got Stencyl about 3 months ago and had no prior programming experience. It was a godsend and pretty easy to get into thanks in HUGE part to the community here being super helpful. I’ve been having a blast making this game and hope to make many more. My background is in the games industry but I have not gone it on my own until now. I did a lot of research about possible game engines and for what I wanted this was by far the best fit.

My plan is to wrap up development in September and do a twofold release. First to the web and then to the iOS and Android. I’ve never done anything exactly like this before but so many people have been so nice and I can’t thank everyone enough.

Help, comments and suggestions are more than welcome. Also – I will answer any and all questions I can.

Thank you so much and more to come soon!

-Tim

I think this is fantastic. It's nice to see several polished games like this coming from stencyllers lately. The idea is great, and I love the energetic design and implementation. The colorful graphics and big bosses are very eye catching.

Looks like a good game to me, although the idea is not new.

101 Levels sound a lot though, did you do the artwork all by urself?

I guess you have the full version of Stencyl since you wanna publish it on ios.

Well, there is nothing more to say. I wish you good luck and for sure you should get a sponsorship!

Thank you!! I did indeed do all the art for the game. Art, programming, gameplay all by me. I do also have the full version of Stencyl too!

Yeha - it's not a new idea but I wanted to get something going that was doable for my skill level. Hopefully the differentiation will be my personal spin on the topic.

Awww Matt! Thanks so much. It's great to hear that from a pro like you! Really do appreciate the kind words man. It's been a blast and you have been a great help too! Thanks brother!

Thanks for the compliments! Max (the main character) is a human. I went through a bit of a process getting him to where he is. Mostly the choices were based on time, my skill and the workload appropriateness. When I first started I had grand visions of a high resolution UbiSoft level animation game. As soon as I started digging into it I quickly realized the insane amount of work it would personally take me. That's not a bad thing mind you but within the scope of what I wanted to do for this first game it was not the best use of my time. Getting comfortable making a game in Stencyl and hitting a fun quality bar superceded my pure artistic desires.

I've been in the games industry for a while and something I notice (and am guilty of) is focusing on one piece versus the whole pie. My friend has a term called 'chaos level' and he uses it to describe things matching with each other in context. Basically - you want the 'chaos level' of something you are creating to be consistent. Companies like Kairosoft (GameDev Story and others) have a high consistency within their games. Every piece works with the other pieces for the most part. Their colors work, the shapes and level of detail work, etc.

Kinda a long answer for a simple question! Here are some shots of Max "through the ages". This was during the 3 week pre-production I went through with him.

Thanks again and any other questions are welcome. I'll post some more screenies as they drop in!

Again, the game looks and plays the way it should, have you tried kong or something yet, armorgames? Sponsorship is always good for publicity, By the way, max doesnt really look like a regular teen, so i had to ask to be sure :)
And i know that feeling about grand visions, but i always ask my best friend and regular pals at school before i start on something new :) i wanted to make a unity game 3D, And i was planning to get like randomly generated worlds and shit ;) but 99% of my friends told me i was aiming for something impossible as a first game.

And could you please check in at my game, i would love to hear your opinion on my 2 Posts :)

really cool, but i would work on the audio a little bit more, background soundtrack is pretty repetitive.

Check out those topics and replied. I haven't looked officially into any sponsorships. I'm pretty new to all this so I am not sure where to start. I have been floating some ideas around.

Are you saying you can get sponsorship before you are done at a place like Kongregate or Armor Games? Just curious since I haven't contacted either at this point.

Thanks for the compliment and totally agree. The audio is due for a tweak pass. I plan to add more music and vary up the soundtrack.

Damn man, i dont have a clue, but i guess you could, but mainly for now Kongregate is the one i care about, and as for you i think Kong to, armorgames seems a bit weird (just my opinion)

I think you should read their Game Dev page, i havent read them yet since i havent been around stencyling and photoshoping for that long, anyway if you dont like any of them, consider Kickstarter, and not indiegogo, never indiegogo... I heard terrible stories about marketing and shit that gogo isnt the right thing

A closer look at some of the robo-animals in the mix. Among other types of robots the game has a collection of animal bots, each with their own unique weapon. If you're lucky you might get a roll which gives you one of these complete as you see 'em. Otherwise you might get the mix and match assembly.

Looks cool, maybe you should try something like Mnrart did, to control an actor on the selection, like move left and rigth with arrow keys

Just a suggestion

I was thinking of adding some sort of swipe for the level select if that's what you are talking about. Probably only be for mobiles though. Good idea!

Thank you so much and look forward to your stuff!

I hope to re-post a new demo in the coming week. If I get a chance I'll add some thoughts I had while developing with Stencyl. I'm no genius by any stretch but I do enjoy using it and it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't be where I am without some of the great support here on the site.

Looking forward to see your demo.
I do appreciate and am also very thankful for the community also. We can find precious and valuable help in here.

I do think Stencyl is giving us (standalone developers) a great chance to shine out there.
Its hard to have success, but we finally have a chance.

I hope I may test your demo so I can try to help you with some opinions of mine!
