Tiny Dangerous Dungeons - Game Boy style metroidvania!

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons is perhaps my biggest and most ambitious project (oh the irony!), I started developing it for Game Boy Jam, but ran out of time so I decided to try to get it done for Stencyl Jam at least.

Timmy returns in a new Game Boy inspired metroidvania adventure! Explore a huge dungeon, collect hidden powerups and gain new skills to aid you in your quest! Can Timmy survive the dangerous dungeons and find the presumably huge treasure?

Use Arrow keys or WASD to move, jump, enter doors and use statues
use X and K to throw knives when you get them
Use Esc to pause the game and view inventory and world map
M to mute/unmute music

Tip1. Save often. Dying makes you lose all progress since last save and statues are the only way to get back health.

Tip2. There are 2 hidden Life Fruits in the dungeon that increase your maximum health. Keep your eyes open for hidden doors.

I'm not sure when I got the knives, but I noticed the knife chest was already opened when I reached it.

Yeah I noticed I accidentally uploaded the game with one of the keys and knives already gotten. I updated the game and fixed it but can't do anything to your saves. There is a tiny cross in top left corner of main menu, double click it to delete save and start anew.

This game is well put together, nice job!

I'm gonna be honest, when I went to save game I thought he was touching her breasts and then he was full of health and I just couldn't... lol. I think this is a great game though with a lovely visual aspect. Good luck!

Turns out the first release was bit bugged, but I've been doing some hotfixing now and the more severe stuff like starting the game with knives and there being duplicate Timmy in one of the water areas causing you senseless deaths should be fixed now.

If you run into any other issues please inform me and I fix them when ever I can.

Deadline is not here yet so I updated the game to 1.1 This fixes bunch of little issues, like falling spikeballs now have smaller hitbox, move slower and don't push you through water and make you fall off scene anymore. Blocks are easier to push, and you can't use doors or save statues while the game is paused, thus cause freezing. The end boss also moves slower now so it should be easier to defeat.

Made one last update for the jam: When you press Esc, you can view your collected items like before, but now it also views the dungeon map, showing your current location, save statue locations and where the items are hidden.

I'm playing this game with a great deal of nostalgia. The graphics, music and gameplay are really done; it's a shame the game didn't make it in time for the GB Jam.

I really enjoyed the game. As a fan of metroidvanias, it does feel really solid.

As a fan of speed-run in metroidvanias though, I'd like at least to know my total game time after I finish. I know there was the time limit for the game jams, but as a note for future games, there's a lot that can be done if you have speed-running in mind (like sequence breaking, damage boosts and stuff like that), or other types of run, like a pacifist or minimalist. It makes design a lot harder though.

Really cool game, shame there isn't a mute button else I would have played a lot further.

... Mute the music with M key. It reads in the game's description.

Ahh sorry, perhaps a visual indication on the pause screen would help as well though.

Really well done.  Totally hit the mark on retro + gameboy gameplay + style.

One little nitpicking thing I found is sometimes when you push blocks against a wall, your character can get stuck (when walking over them).  Only by jumping over it or getting more momentum can you overcome it.  attached in the image is a spot i found.
