Hi Space Pirates!

and here it is. A new version including all the hard work from the last months. The game is tested including story level 7 and could break after this (i actually dont know) but could also work for the whole game. You will get a nice overview of the state the game is in. This is a Stencyl exclusive version. Let me know if you want to compile an own version (Mac, Linux).

-- Keyboard Controls: --
Move: W,A,S,D
Fire: Arrow keys
Select: Space
Esc/Save/Back: Esc

Keys can be customized or you can setup a gamepad (not fully tested)

Some questions i have:

Gameplay:
  • What are the top 3 things you like (if any)?
  • What are the top 3 things you dislike (if any)?
  • Are you ok with the controls or would you prefer WASD and mouse (to shoot)?
  • Do you think it would be more fun to have ammo for guns?

General:
  • Would you buy the game (if yes for which price? - game has around 3-5 hours gameplay)?
  • Is the performance good? Which system do you use?

Hi Space Pirates!
i uploaded a new version with a lot of fixes (link above). Also gamepad should work fine now.

I changed how the projectiles interact with objects in the levels.
The logic so far:
  • Laser projectiles put objects on fire. They burn for a while (the fire can spread if objects are next to it) and burn down afer a few seconds
  • Explosions (also projectiles) will insta kill objects and fire
  • Laser projectiles wont pass through a burning object until it burned down
This led to sometimes a bit too long lasting shoot outs in gangways where enemies where hiding behind crates and basically firing the hell out of the palyer while the palyer had to wait till the cover burned down. I changed this now so that a burning object will crush if you shoot it again (first time put it on fire; second time crush it):

I also replaced the shotgun (kind of a close combat weapon) to a grenade launcher which is a bit overpowered but a lot fun. I dont hink that will add ammo to tweak it but maybe a reload animation which takes a bit time after 3 shots which appears automatically. I also want to add a curve and decreasing speed for the projectile:

Again, please give me some feedback if you want to try the game:

Since I'm not your target audience you shouldn't really bother too much with my feedback.
But you requested feedback a few times so this is at least one of them.

Maybe the game has more stuff that I would like. I saw some stuff on puzzles that I would like to try out, but as I can't get passed the first ship I gave up. (4 retries, but I don't shoot / disarm the gun in the middle of the ship)
Some of the exploration that was in the development blog would be interesting to me as well but I never got to that point.

What are the top 4 things you like (if any)?
1. intro
2. automatic picking of stuff
3. typing when hacking and other sounds like crush and sigh noices
4. animations & active scenes with moving stuff like background etc..

What are the top 4 things you dislike (if any)?
1. shooting
2. repetitive music
3. too unforgiving in the beginning when you enter the first ship with too many cards to find and a gun that kills you way too fast
4. Shop : too much information

Are you ok with the controls or would you prefer WASD and mouse (to shoot)?
I would rather use arrow keys and if I suppose to really shoot with spacebar when pointing to the direction I need to shoot.
But I would quit the game when I need to shoot too much.

Do you think it would be more fun to have ammo for guns?
  No

General:
Would you buy the game (if yes for which price? - game has around 3-5 hours gameplay)?
  No

Is the performance good? Which system do you use?
Good performance with Windows 10 Home, Core i3-7100 CPU , 4GB Ram

If you release an OSX version I'll happily test for you. I do have an ancient Windows laptop somewhere I could dig out and try.

I only played for a little bit so far, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I got through the first mission and am part way through the second. I ran it using Wine on Linux and didn't run into any issues. I didn't try full screen, though.

I might change my assessment after I get further, but here is my initial impression.

What are the top 3 things you like (if any)?
1. Storyline is engaging, and doesn't get in the way of the game.
2. Music, sound effects fit the mood
3. First level was fun to explore. I didn't feel like my hand was being held, which I appreciated.

What are the top 3 things you dislike (if any)?
Nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Are you ok with the controls or would you prefer WASD and mouse (to shoot)?
I prefer keyboard controls over mouse. I haven't tried the controller yet, but I got along fine with the keyboard.

Do you think it would be more fun to have ammo for guns?
Maybe for special weapons, but for now I think I have enough to keep track of.

Would you buy the game (if yes for which price? - game has around 3-5 hours gameplay)?
Yes.
Price--it's hard to say because I already know what I'd be getting... where as if I were browsing the store, I'd only have your screenshots and trailers to go off of. Still, the $5 to $10 range seems fitting to me.

Is the performance good? Which system do you use?
Yes.
Ubuntu 16.04 (Wine)
CPU: Intel Core i7-6800K CPU @ 3.8GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 970, GeForce GTX 970
RAM: 30535MiB / 128865MiB

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

@mdotedot
Thanks for posting feedback even when you are not the target audience. I appreciate it and still get valuable thoughts/input from it. I might move the needle a bit more towards exploring but shooting will be an imprtant part of the game. I havent touched the music since 3 years and will need to add more and also different music. I might introduce the shop a bit later or piece by piece.

@merrak
Thanks for your input as weel. I do not want to add ammo because i a gree that it would be too much to have in mind. I will add a every 5 shots there is an automatic reload animation" for the grenade launcher thought because it is otherwise too powerful.

I will finish the game and will promote when its in a more complete state (also will compile a MAC version). Promotion takes work hours as well :)

Thanks guys!

Hi Space Pirates!
I had a loss in my family so i had to pause for 2 weeks but i am still closing in on the finishing line.
I mentioned before that i try to give the players new objectives to keep the game fresh.

here an example where you have to find battery packs. Doors will open depending on the overall energy level in the mission...and the oxygen support will stop at a certain point which complicate things. There are Oxygen stations though where the player can breathe (ignore the console texts on the left).

Cheers!

Hôla Space Pirateros!

exciting news: I will move to BETA next week which means that the game is fully playable and i polished quite a bit already.
The only medium (not big) feature which i need to revisit is the shop. I think i have to trim it down a bit. Player (including myself) confuse hacking (terminals) and lockpicking (safes) when upgrading the skill. I might just merge them to "hacking". This would limit the options on how to spend skillpoints only to "upgrading health" and "upgrading hacking" but it might be better.

I also might rework the gun offers a bit. The laser is the primary gun which has upgrade states while the others harm specific enemies more. This is rather a puzzle situation because i dont know when the palyer will buy those. So i might give them away for free in specific levels.

The last thing: I think i will remove repairinf your ship. It will happen rarely.

Next steps:
Again, moving to BETA next week. Open up for more testers and increase the spread a bit more. i am still debating with myself if i should give away this game for free or sell it. I learned so much and i might put those learnings in a follow up title. Lets see.
Let me know what you think.

Cheers!

Sounds exciting!

If you're already planning a sequel then one idea to consider would be the shareware model from the 90s: first installment is free, with the follow-up titles for sale.
