Thanks for posting aeklad. Just knowing someone is interested helps me get energy to to help keep going (although at this point, it'd more likely be a restart with a different genre).

Sometimes all it takes is for one person to post that it will help them out to get me motivated to make a tutorial. I just need to know that someone will make a use of it and actually appreciate the work that goes into it.

The block breaker idea is just no end of troubles, so instead, I am throwing out that plan and rebooting the project from scratch with a new base instead. I think it will help a lot in the long-run to have a simpler base to grow from (thought the block breaker game would be a lot simpler than it ended up being).

Thus, attached is the first part of the new 3.0 tutorial, based on a simple space shooter. The start hasn't changed all too much since that's the start of any game looks basically the same. It'll really start to show off the new path soon.

Hey man!

I love your tutorials! I didn't realize that you were "Abigayl", but those 2.0 tutorials were fantastic at helping a knuckle-head like me piece together my first game.  :P

I haven't been on these forums for a couple of months because I've been finishing off a cartoon but you shouldn't be put off making more tutorials, you've got a skill for explaining complicated stuff in a clear and understandable way - even I understood the trigonometry in lesson  4 and I'm dumb as a brick!

In fact, why not upload these new tutorials to Newgrounds and get a buzz going for Stencyl 3.0?

I'm gonna go through your new tutorial straight after my morning  bowl of Frosted Lucky Charms!

YUM!

I donno why but embedding the swf here doesn't show it on chrome. Maybe upload to the arcade to make things faster?
(I'm glad you restarted the project. Keep it up mate).

Thanks Turbo. It's comments like yours that keep me motivated :). I'll likely be uploading this new one here on Stencyl, on Kongregate, and possibly on NG too. Once the first part is finished, I'll see how much interest there is for me to keep going.

Sadiq, thanks again for your continuous support! As you suggested, I have uploaded the first version (the block breaker game) to my StencylArcade (http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/25921), and I am planning on working on the second version today and possibly uploading it by the end of the day, hopefully close to completion actually; I can hijack a lot of the parts used in the block breaker game for the shooter, and this is my main project for today (since Jesus gave His life for me this day, I figure one way to celebrate is to give something to others :) ).

I have uploaded the new tutorial up to where I am at right now. I have the pics made for the next section, but I haven't been able to put them in yet. You can find the tutorial here: http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/25939

I'll keep updating it as I go. If anyone wants the actual .SWF file, let me know.

Hey man! I'd love the whole swf file once it's all done.

When I tried working through the last file it stops on page 22, just when my bran was clicking into gear!   :P

Yeah, it's not done yet ;). I'll be continuing work on it after the LD is over. Once it's done, I'll post the SWF too (will keep updating the tutorial on my profile as the tutorial progresses).

How'd you like it thus far? Any suggestions/comments? Did you use normal zoom or 100% zoom?

Personally I haven't really used the zoom feature but that's only because I'm vaguely familiar with Stencyl, so if  the "Set X-Speed to 0 for Self" block is mentioned, for example, then I kinda already know where it is (sometimes), but I imagine it would be a great help to n00beroonies.

There isn't really anything I feel I can criticize - everything is clearly laid out and easy to understand and I feel like some of it is  actually sinking into my thick head.

It's also a nice way to spend a Saturday morning.  :P

I've completed more of the tutorial now that the Ludum Dare is basically over. The tutorial has the next section of code finished, which is the part to keep the player inside of the game area. Those two sections of code took around two dozen slides to show, putting the total close to 75.

The new file can be played here (if it doesn't work, try a browser besides Chrome, which has been buggy with the StencylForge lately): http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/26149

Due to a student cancellation IRL, I had a decent amount of free time tonight, and I put most of it to use on the tutorial. I'm finally starting to see the ending in sight... at least a bit anyways. Two of the three actors are now in the tutorial, and those two are almost fully coded (I have the last screenshots for the player imported; it's just a matter of making the slides for them). All that is left is the enemies and explaining some collision stuff. After that comes the final touches on the interface and the proofreading, etc.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be starting the enemies... I'm curious as to how people will like this new, fully-interactive style of tutorial...

Over the weekend and yesterday, I've been hard at work on the tutorial in my spare time, and hopefully it shows. The code slides are almost totally done. All 3 actors have their coding completed, which is great.

Things still do to:
1. "Main" coding and using the scene tool to create the player.
2. Explaining about sensor collisions and/or groups.
3. Adding the game demo at the end.
(That's it [I think] for the actual components of the tutorial)
-------------------------------------------------------------
4. Adding a better frame, buttons, etc. around the screenshots
5. Adding visual cues for the 100% zoom for the edge scrolling.
6. Adding the slide bar for the bottom for quick referencing
7. Proofreading, etc.

Nice!  I'm excited to work through this new tutorial.  Your tutorials and demos are really helping me with Stencyl and coding in general.  Thank you.
