Forum Suggestion: Make New Messages more Prominent

This came up in the Artist Trading Card Swap thread, when the participators started sending group messages out.  I and others didn't notice the fact that we had new messages right away, and I think that this could be fixed by adding a new color up there or something.

Right now, the Home link is in a neat little orange highlight, and when you hover over other links up there, they're highlighted in blue.  When a user has new messages, I think it could benefit by giving the Messages link a highlight (even when not being hovered over), in a color that stands out, like green.

Furthermore, some issues came up with the actual sending and receiving of messages to multiple people. D:  I'm sure I replied days ago (and I'm certain I clicked 'Reply All'), but it sounds like no one received mine.  Could be some backend errors going on, perhaps maybe?

What we're doing/displaying right now is what SMF defaults to. There are no backend errors, and if they're not responding, it's likely that they don't see them.

Weirdness!  Still, the "Inbox (#)" display isn't exactly obvious while users are casually browsing.  Or maybe I've just been spoiled by other forums that put bold red text at the top that says "HEY, YOU HAVE 1 NEW MESSAGE, GO READ IT". XD

It actually seems like the forum already does this on its own, which I tested. What I put above that's new is the total message count, not the unread count which the forum does. What annoys me and I can't alter is that "unread" can be entirely wiped once you visit your inbox without reading the messages.

Oops, posted under the test account.

My browser DOES have a popup that tells you "You have new messages waiting, would you like to view them now? Yes/No" and then opens up a new window/tab when I click yes. Maybe check your profile settings?

I don't see any options like that in my profile settings anywhere...

For the record, I'm using Chrome 10.0.648.204.

ALSO, word in the ATC thread is that most users received my Reply All message (I knew I'd done it right after all, hah!), but at least one (Chibicat) did not.  Man, it's tough pinpointing who did and didn't receive messages, which ones did/didn't get sent at all, etc.  CRAZINESS.  We'll try to pull together and have some workable numbers for you.
