Please note that due to high demand, this course is now free for educators via request only. Please PM me if you are an educator, advising approximately how many coupons you need, and I'll endeavour to respond within 48 hours.
Hi all,

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Innes Borkwood, the author of Learning Stencyl 3.x Game Development: Beginner's Guide (Packt Publishing, 2013). You can find more about the book at www.TheStencylBook.com.  I also have a successful commercial Stencyl course on Udemy (more about that below).

I have just published a basic Stencyl course on Udemy - "Create video games with Stencyl - an introduction". This course is available completely free of charge to educators if you use the 'coupon' link below, and I hope it will be of use to educators who would like to introduce game development into their classroom, but don't know where to start. There are currently 12 lectures and over 1 hour of tutorials. The course starts with the absolute basics, and covers:

  • Locating and downloading Stencyl
  • Testing some sample games
  • Working step-by-step through creating a basic game
  • Reviewing the game and considering improvements
The game is very basic - it's the framework of a 'catching' game, in which the player moves an actor to catch some objects falling from random locations within the scene, but it's a good starting point if you have never used Stencyl before.

You can find the introductory course here: https://www.udemy.com/create-video-games-with-stencyl-beginners/?couponCode=FREE4NOW

I have had a successful, more advanced, Stencyl game development course available on Udemy for about 12 months now, which you may also find useful if you want to delve a bit deeper into Stencyl development, and pick up some more skills for utilising Stencyl in the classroom. The advanceD course has over 50 lectures and more than 7 hours of HD video. The course is on Udemy for $199, but I am happy to offer it to Stencyl forum users for $29 -just click on the following link: https://www.udemy.com/create-your-first-video-game-without-coding/?couponCode=SFR29.

I do hope that educators find the free access to the introductory course useful.

EDIT: 13th Oct 2014. I'm delighted to announce that over 500 students joined the free introductory course during the first few days after publication.

EDIT: 17th Oct 2014. The course is still free with the coupon link. The coupon link may change in the future to prevent abuse, but I will endeavour to keep it free for education users.

Thanks.

The free course is for absolute beginners; I often find that people just don't know where to start with Stencyl, and video learning is a very popular format.

Not to steal your thread here but it looks like you have been pretty successful with this already. I am thinking about making a Udemy course for Scratch (Stencyl's little brother). I already have a few video lectures ready and am committed to making more. Are the sales good enough to justify your time? How did you get that popularity - was it because you wrote a book on Stencyl or did you just happen to get found by buyers? Thanks!

I just wanted to add an update to say that the introductory Stencyl game development course is still available for free on Udemy, but only if you use the following coupon link:

https://www.udemy.com/create-video-games-with-stencyl-beginners/?couponCode=FREE4NOW

I'll try to keep the course free for Stencyl forum users, but the link may change every now and again to prevent abuse (i.e. spreading to non-Stencyl forums).

Without the coupon link, the course is $9.

I would really like some feedback on the course, so if you have signed up, please do comment here, and let me know what you think. I'd particularly like to know, if you are an educator, whether or not you have found the course to be useful for you or your students. Is there anything else you would like me to add to get you or students started with Stencyl?

I'd recommend doing the beginner's video course first, because it's free, and it will give your friend a chance to decide if they enjoy using Stencyl.

Whether the advanced course, or the book is 'better', is a matter of learning preferences. Some people like to have a physical book (or ebook) propped up on their desk whilst they learn, whilst others prefer video. Also, the video course is interactive, so if students have any questions, or need help with any of the topics covered in the course, I will respond in the course discussion.

Joining the free course provides the best discount available for the main video course, so it's definitely worth signing up for that - there's absolutely nothing to lose by signing up for the free course.

Note that the beginner's course is free when using the link provided in the first post of this topic.

Due to the unexpected success of the free course, and the amount of time it is taking me to manage it, I'll be withdrawing free access to the public on Sunday 16th October.

I will provide free-access coupons to educators via PM / email. If educators would like free access for their students, I'll happily provide that too. Turnaround for free coupons should be quick; probably no more than 48 hours.

I'm sorry I don't have the resources to keep it free for everyone, but I will provide a discount via the Stencyl forums.
