Dynamic lighting in 2D games with Sprite DLight

Hey everyone,

I would like to introduce the tool for game developers and artists I am currently running a pretty successful Kickstarter campaign for, and I would like to ask about the status quo regarding shader integration with stencyl.

The main use of Sprite DLight is the generation of normal maps from 2D sprites in one click, which allows for quick and atmospheric dynamic lighting effects in 2D games.

There are 24 hours left to get the tool at the Kickstarter backer price and to participate in the backer beta, which will start by the end of December.
All stretch goals are reached, and the project is more than 650% funded.

Sprite DLight's Kickstarter campaign shows a lot more examples, including 3 videos.
The tool is also on Steam Greenlight, hoping for more Yes votes.

Any kind of feedback and support is highly appreciated.

Hello Deee,

Looking awesome!
Not sure how to implement a dynamic lightning in Stencyl at this moment and if it would not take too much of a penalty on the framerate..

Good luck with your stretch-goals on Kickstarter!

Hi M.E. ;)

Thanks for the nice words and for the information.
That's of course sad news. I hoped to find some crazy people here, who already made some experiments with shaders for Stencyl.  8)
My good news are: stretch goal #3 has been reached today, so the re-rendering feature will be fully implemented.

Subscribers are can already work with shaders, and the next version will soon be released (I think, soonish) so look forward to it.

The comment about not being able to use a shader is a personal one and I was not implying that Stencyl can't do it, but that I personally would not how to do it.
Impact on FPS is also a personal statement.

Congratulations on your reached stretch goal #3

Hopefully some other Stencyler can implement your shader into Stencyl because it would be awesome to use this in Stencyl!

Just out of personal interest, is this very similar to Sprite Lamp (www.snakehillgames.com)?

If not what are the differences? I'm asking because I am planning on investing in a sprite dynamic lighting tool soon, and I would like to know which one to choose.

Thanks!

I just looked at the kickstarter page and this looks amazing! BACKED!

Thank you guys :)

Sprite DLight doesn't actually provide any shader code to implement dynamic lighting in game engines, the output of the tool is still images.
However, any normal map shader will work.

@LewCorp: Thanks for backing :)
I guess you found the difference, but for future readers of the thread a very short summary:
Sprite Lamp combines 2-5 hand drawn lighting profiles to a normal map.
Sprite DLight automatically generates a normal map from an existing sprite.

The fact that it generates them automatically is amazing! Nice job and keep up the good work!

Thank you.

It is almost over: There are 24 hours left to get the tool at the Kickstarter backer price and to jump in for the beta.
