Have you checked in your preferences? [File > Preferences > Editors] On the Image Editor dropdown selection, there is Pencyl(Built-In Editor) and Choose Application.

Also, there was a bug that prevented Pencyl to launch on Mac/Linux that was fixed recently. To get the fixed version, delete <your workspace>/tools/Pencyl.jar and reinstall it from within Stencyl

Same here.  I just installed Stencyl for the first time this morning and so far, not having the editor work I'm not impressed.  Stencyl said it downloaded Pencyl and I did find it and set the path to it inside preferences, but it won't work when I click edit.  I made sure Pencyl works by double clicking it itself and it does work.  What the heck, Stencyl can't even open an image editor?!

I deleted my workspace that had Pencyl in it and Stencyl downloaded it again, still nothing when I click Edit for images.  In Preferences I can set it to Photoshop or Gimp and that works, but why does Stencyl not  open the internal editor?  Not a good impression my first day.

May go back to Gamemaker yet...

You can't set Pencyl itself as the chosen Image Editor since it isn't a native app. If you want to use Pencyl, use the "built-in" dropdown option.

If you're on Windows, we recommend using a better (and native) image editing app like Paint.NET.

I did use the drop down option and nothing happens.  I agree, after looking at Pencyl, my programs are better, but I would like to see the built in option at least work.

Since I have the JDK installed, Stencyl can't use the .jar file?

Stencyl can't use it via the other option because the other option assumes you're using a native app. Java apps have to be run explicitly using the Java command, so this is why it doesn't launch using the choose-your-own option.

Pencyl isn't really a built-in app in the sense that it's part of Stencyl or built by us (I'm reevaluating whether we should continue calling it Pencyl). It's a third party option that we provide for users who are unable to use something else because they're in a restricted environment or don't know of other options.

Of course, it ought to work out of the box, and what captaincomic said above should apply - delete the JAR and have Stencyl redownload it - the bug he discovered may also apply to newer versions of the JDK. If not, captaincomic can step through some debug steps to see what's up.

OK.  I did delete it and the "Built in editor" option still does nothing.  I have Photoshop CS6 working though, can't beat that.  :)

I get stuck on trying to make things work in IDE's when they don't.  Quirk of mine...

Please post your logs (Debug -> Logs -> Generate Logs). Did it ever prompt you to install Pencyl?

It downloaded Pencyl and said it was ready to use.  It did download it as I found it and the compressed file too.  It just does nothing when I click Edit.

Please post your logs. Does it work when you double click Pencyl.jar?
