Free and inexpensive game art for commercial use

Hi everybody

I'm putting together a site for 2d developers who use Stencyl and other engines for their games. I'm trying to make a huge collection  of royalty free 2d art for use in commercial games.  All the work  is my own because I'm trying to maintain a similar style across the library.

There are already hundreds of assets available,  mosty  high resolution side scrolling perspective but there are gui elements, icons, animated sprites and more. .  Some are free but not all of them are,  but I'm aiming to keep the price as low as possible , from just a few cents to a dollar or so, depending on the amount of assets included and the time it has taken for me to create them. If you check them out I'm sure you'll be surprised at their price.

The goal is to allow devs to be able to create a finished game without having to spend a fortune on graphics  and the idea is to create a large enough library of high quality assets  to be able to  offer them at such low prices.

If you like the idea and would like to check out the assets You can visit the site at http://www.gamedeveloperstudio.com

I've been working on the site for over a year now and I feel there are enough assets now to justify trying to create interest in the site. If there is a lot of interest then I will dedicate all my time to the production of more and more assets.  I'd love to hear your feedback.

Great idea!

I'd love to hear your feedback.
Please add a wide variety of effects of impacts, explosions, magic effects, fireballs, puffs of smoke, sparks, lightning, debris, etc.
These animated graphic effects are very necessary in almost all kinds of games.

Hi Liberado

Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you like the Idea.  I'll do some exploding, fire and lightning effects. I held off on those because a lot of engines already have a particle effects generator and there are already lots on Open game art.   I think you're right some of my own for the site are necessary. I gonna do some.

At least for me, it is not easy to find these kinds of animated effects with clean and high-resolution graphics.
If you create a wide assortment of them and keep your low prices, I will be very interested in them.

I like the content of your site, and your prices are very attractive, but I miss the kind of effects that I mentioned. I hope you create them. Thanks for your excellent work.

Website looks great, lots of really nice designs you've created!

I'm exactly the same.

The thing I have found with sites like OpenGameArt is I often seem to end up finding lots of pixel art style effects, and I don't want to use pixel art in any of my work.

So I think there are a fair amount of effects out there, just not necessarily in the style some of us like.

Thanks for the feedback  SquarePug  and Liberado, I'm glad people are liking the assets. It Looks set then, I'll have to do some effects, I might also put a voting system on the site so I can find out what assets are needed in general.

I totally agree with you about OGA it's a great site, but seems that most of 2d sprites on there are pixel art style,  in fact that's why I don't bother putting pixel art on my site,  OGA has it covered already.  and I prefer to stick to one style for the moment.

I'll let you both know when the effects are done, although there's a few things that I'm working on at the moment.

Well I jumped ahead and started playing around with some HD effects, I came up with this orb, I've attached the gif I hope it shows, I haven't  put it on the site yet, I'll probably make a family of these and others before putting them on the site.  You can add it to your asset collections if you want. I'll email the hd sprite sheet to you both if you want , private message me  and let me know where you want me to send it.

I'll keep you posted with progress I make on these.

Hi Robert, I actually found your site a few months ago (when you had the sale on) and have almost all your resources, will top up my account soon and grab those little monsters to, the site is great and the assets are fantastic both in quality and price,  I was completely blown away after having downloaded pretty much all your assets for less than £10 and would recommend your work to everyone here, I am a pretty useless artist but I can code in many languages, you gave me the link I needed to bust into game making with high quality art at a price even the slimmest of budgets could afford, Thank You o/

Beautiful. I hope you can create many animated and categorized graphic effects in high resolution (at least 512x512) and with transparent background. They are extremely useful because they can be used in all games and provide a much more professional look. I was looking for such a collection, and I am sure many other game developers also need it.

Hi Robert,

Your site looks great; a good range of free images, and your prices for the other images are very reasonable.

It's a wonderful resource for the artistically challenged (like me) or for those who want good art quickly!
Visit www.TheStencylBook.com - the only published book for learning Stencyl.

High Innes.  Thanks for your kind words and I'm glad you like the site , I hope that if not now but someday you will find it useful. There's still loads of work to be done including new assets and general site improvements, I'm not aiming to be the number one stop for assets but I hope to have a decent enough collection for my site to be considered worth a look by lots of indie devs out there.
