Using Stencyl as a first timer. Need a quick confirmation on an idea? Sorry!

Hi all,

After reading through 8 pages of questions, they all seem to be about genuine help issues that people are having whilst building their game, and i'm not quite at that stage yet, so feel a bit sheepish asking this question.

I've always dreamed of doing a hobby/side project of creating a small(ish) game that I could be proud of, even if only a few people got to play it. Unfortunately I have a quite a busy and demanding day job (but that doesn't stop me day dreaming out of the window looking over Manchester City Centre!) so I guess I really need confirmation of what i'd like to do, is possible with Stencyl. I've read over a bunch of documentation for Stencyl, and watched some YouTube videos, and believe what I want to do is possible, I would just like confirmation of that I suppose!

I've had an idea about a game for a couple of years now. The main "features" of the game would be:

Static backgrounds or images (perhaps a few sprites here and there) for navigation
Inventory System
Character Equipment of that system
Automatic Text based combat (like D&D dice i suppose!)
Local loot tables

Has anyone heard of Buried Town? I guess you could say in a way it's like that.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.locojoy.buriedtown
https://itunes.apple.com/app/buried-town/id1014920360?ign-mpt=uo%3D8

Is this possible?

Anyway thanks for reading my "Ask a Question",  hopefully next time I post (if I do) it will actually be game related that I may be stuck on!

Cheers all.

Yes, it is possible, but be aware that making a game exactly the way you want is not exactly the easiest of tasks. I'm sure there are people here willing to help though. Best of luck with your game.
My Stencyl resources are available here: https://luyren.itch.io/
Cutscenes, RPG Elements, Particles, Map System and many more.

Many tumes when people come up with a new idea they cant figure out themselves I tend to make apecific tutorials for it. And my main rule with stencyl is:

As long as it is 2D, has limited online functions, and the designer has enough spirit to tackle ahatever comes his way, its possible =)

Thanks for that. It's definitely going to be 2D. Not even contemplating online functions yet, maybe a scoreboard in future, and would have enough spirit to get stuff done! I've seen quite a lot of your posts and bookmarked alot of them too for future reference, which will no doubt come in handy!

As long as I keep it simple as you like, and don't off any grand ideas that would make it the most complicated game in history I should be ok!

Whut?
Hehe, it means kind of like "horen horen" in Dutch, it just means I agree with what you said :P

Good luck with your game Grymligast, hope you enjoy using Stencyl to make it!

hi Grymligast,

I'm (more or less) from manchester!

I tried Game Salad and Game Maker before going for Stencyl, and whilst a lot of it is personal preference,  I do think Stencyl was the best. Also, Game Salad seems to have changed a lot since I used it (maybe it isn't absolutely awful now, it definitely was when I was using it).

Here's my advice:
1. Look here http://www.stencyl.com/game/showcase/ at what can be done with Stencyl for inspiration.
2. Download a couple of the sample games from http://www.stencyl.com/developers/samples/ to get an idea of how they work.
3. Do the tutorial http://www.stencyl.com/help/ and get started

Just about anything 2D... or sometimes 3D, is possible :)  The usual limit is the developer's ability to stay motivated and manage a large project. If you're just starting out, it's easy to underestimate how much time will go into simple-sounding tasks.

Just wanted to add on to this.  Merrak is definitely right, sometimes the simplest of things take the most time.  The first time I designed an inventory system, it took me at least an hour to work out how to do it, even more to code it!  And I couldn't even begin to wrap my mind around a drag n' drop inventory at the time (until about a day later).  Now, I can create one in a matter of minutes and include more features than my earliest prototypes.

If you're willing to learn, have the patience to not give up when you fail, and are willing to see things through, then you can do anything you put your mind to.

Also, this is Ask A Question.  You can ask us about anything Stencyl-related. No need to feel sheepish!
PM me if you require help.  I'm always glad to help out!

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

The biggest issue is definitely not to let my imagine run away with itself and keep things simple. All your advice and links will be very helpful to me.

Thank you for being gentle with my first question!
