I mostly modify existing sprites, this is really my first custom work. It is for my first game ever, (Not completed) "I like Toast."

Haha, just found this topic, great art !

I used the 4-way template made by GameGuy on StencylForge and added 4 more directions turning into an 8-way template.  The diagonal directions are my first animations and I would like to know what other people think about it.

Biggest thing that strikes me as wrong is the placement of the creature's wing relative to the guy.  Guy doesn't sit in front of the wings from our perspective, but rather should be covered partially by one of them.

Here's a in-game screenshot of the game I'm working on. Any name suggestions? It's a pretty straightforward shooter.
I love the tank :P

Loving this thread, lots of great examples of pixel art. Here's one of a character of mine called Wreck-Tangle:

I'm not as well versed in pixel art as some of the other artists that posted so it doesn't quite look as good as I'd like.

Update: I brought the size down as kindly suggested by Kajitii, and also re-did the eyes. Looks much better now!

It is better than what I can do for characters xD

You probably should have posted it smaller though.  And the edges of the eyes have clashing color with the rest of the character, especially considering that you colored the outline of the character (assuming it was black when you started drawing).  I think it would be better if you went with a very dark purple as opposed to black.  But like many things, I could be wrong.

Or you could be right ;) Thanks for input!

Here is a 24x16 sprite for one of my games.

It's a guy in a superman costume since the game takes place on Halloween.

What do you think?

Hey Lazyboy, that looks really good. I instantly recognized it as how you described.

Thanks to this thread I've caught a major case of the pixel art bug. Here's a little sprite I did of good ol' Robocop,

Here's a couple one-off sprites of a random character I just made up, called Bullit. More will likely be made because I like him.

UPDATE: More sprites, and the outline color is changed to a dark grey.

You should try shading it.

@WriggleKick:

Hope you don't mind, but I made a little edit.

Some things I did/Suggestions/Tips:
1) Changed the color palette to be a little more interesting instead of just having grey as the main color.
2) Added some AA (anti-aliasing) and highlights to help make the head 'pop'.
3) Added a little scarf-like thing because I'm lazy and scarves, however redundant and overused they are these days in character design, make stuff look cool. In any case, the point is to make the character a little more interesting and maybe give them something that defines them in a simplistic way. Examples like Mario, who you can recognize just by his red/blue/yellow outfit or even just the hat.
4) Took the name of Bullit and it sounded like 'bullet' so that's what I based the head after. The head seemed to have that kind of shape in the first place anyway so I just went with it.
5) Made arms a bit stubbier, just because it seems to fit the kind of character.

Hope this gave you some ideas for your character.

I wouldn't have thought scarves are overused, but I'm not closely following modern game character design at the moment. I would have picked a different color than orange, but I love the art! Nice interpretation Strasteo!
