Allow the player to type text in game?

I want the player to be able to type in to a text box and save what is typed as a variable. I cant seem to figure out how to do this.

I've seen a few threads about this before, so it's worth searching the forums. I haven't tried to do this myself. These might be useful:

In forge search text field.  I think that's what it was called you can download and use it.. I got it going awhile back... I haven't tried it lately
