I'm still thinking about FGL but just to be clear- do you think Kongregate plays all the games it gets emailed? That is, I shouldn't send them another email if I don't hear back?

You said the game you want them to sponsor wasn't made with Stencyl, then you could add Playtomic's API or something similar to track game plays. Then you would know if they played it and for how long. Probably is too late to try that, but you still can send more emails. I've sent a lot of emails to Greg and to sponsor@kongregate.com and never got a reply, but some developers have had more luck.

I would think they would play most if not all games they would get, even if it was for only a few minutes. But they definitely not reply unless they were willing to talk terms.

wow, that's an interesting discussion!
I must add a disclaimer about the huge checklist; i have never published a successful game(yet!), so every advice from veteran developers is golden to me!

@camaleonyco: you made some of the games i really loved!especially "days of monsters"!

I don't know about that, to be honest. Anecdotal but still: I've been able to get pretty much every big name sponsor to check out my games on FGL (Adult Swim, Newgrounds, Armor, etc) except Kongregate.

And on the topic of FGL, it's a good service and I'm very happy with what they've done for me so far. It might be "better" to email sponsors directly but at least in my case, I only even have contact with sponsors because of FGL (they PM'ed me after seeing my game and started a dialogue).

@thechaosengine I'm surprised to read that as I assumed to get those sponsors to see your game you either have to be well known, e-mail them directly, or have a highly rated game (8+).  I have uploaded 3 games to FGL (2 hidden after a failed quick auction), and there aren't many sponsor views and certainly not from Newgrounds, Armor Games, Kongregate, or most others I've actually heard of.  One was rated 6.5 (in hindsight it was crap so I'll ignore that one), and the other two were rated 7.  I plan to send an e-mail to sponsors though when I upload my next game linking to my two games.

By the way, congratulations (you know what I'm talking about ;))

My game is rated an 8. And at this point I'm not going to put anything for sale unless it gets that or higher.

And thanks :)

My congratulations again to all who have managed to have their game well paid and got a fair rating!

Since there are also veteran developer i'd like also to know some tips about a faster or more efficient working method, or some beginner mistake to avoid!

Thanks for a wouderfull thread, gives alot of pointers to think of when starting out.

I can add a note to the mute-stuff.
I occationally play alot of games in Kongregate, what i notice alot is BAAAAAAAD background music, and then there is either NO mute option, OR you get to mute EVERYTHING including game play sounds like firing bullets etc, most does not have mute music or sounds, its either all or nothing, at those times i automaticly 1* the games and leave because i cant stand bad music in games.
but its not always bad music. Sometimes i sit and listen to my own music, watching some tv-episodes of something and the music is just annoying, so having no music mute there, or it mutes all sounds, its likly to have 1* rating direct.

On the FGL note if somebody can clarify.
If i manage to make an ok-ish game (new to stencyl, got loads of ideas) and put it on FGL,
if i would get a sponsor for the game. do i still own it and can upload it to kongregate under my own name etc?

It depends on the terms negotiated with the sponsor. Generally, you'll retain full ownership of your game, but you'll be restricted from releasing it to other sites for a certain period of time. Always be sure you understand and are OK with the terms of the sponsorship before you agree to it.

I don't recommend putting your first game on FGL, and while "ok-ish" may be good enough to release to portals, don't expect a sponsorship for your first few games (exception: if you're an amazing artist).

That'll i probably wont do no,  but my first game wont be ok-ish, it will be dreadfull, ugly without "story". Most likly my first 5-10 games will be elk dung :P

This is based on alot, im currently sitting on my mothers really bad laptop that runs idle temp around 60c, slow and annoying in general. However, this is because im moving from another town to this one due to work in august and dont have my own real workstation.

but soon(tm) ill be able to work with a more comfortable computer and until then i probably i learned "enough" with stencyl and some "nicer" pixel art for the games, then ill start post those on either kong directly, or give FGL a shot, cuz i fancy the idea to earn a few extra bucks while learning and doing fun stuff, even if its not a deal breaker, im ok with earning zit too. ;>

wow this became long.

tl;dr: go back read ;>

Puzzles based solely on colour differentiation. Add text descriptions, different shapes or shading so that people who are colourblind are not excluded.

never thought about that before,.. thanks!

That's the kind of comments that should generate this thread :)

I often see game development stereotipized even between experienced programmers that haven't tried before.Good games are made with a lot of collective knowledge and experience.

I'm necroing a bit here, but...

I saw something in that list that said "WASD + Touchpad" is impractical. How? That's how I've played my Pixel Ninja game most of the time and its worked fine for me.
Do NOT PM me your questions, because I likely will not respond. If I have replied to your question on the forum, keep using that topic. Thanks!
