iStencyl Game Jam (Original Topic)

Two silly questions:

1.  If we make the game in the latest StencylWorks and use the option to convert the project to mobile, that means it is an "iStencyl" game instead of just a "StencylWorks" game, correct?

2.  Since I don't have an iOS license or an iPhone etc., what is meant by the touch variants of blocks?  Are there blocks that let you touch part of the screen to do things, and if so will those blocks work in the SWF version so I can test on PC (by clicking the mouse where the end user would touch with their finger)?

Thanks!

@All - in case you didn't catch the memory all over, the preview of StencylWorks 1.4 now allows server builds to be submitted from iStencyl Lite users. You still need an Apple Dev License, but for those who have it, it's a great opportunity to test.

1) Yes

2) The touch blocks appear for Mobile Projects. They work in both the Flash and iOS versions of the app.

Thanks for the quick response!  I realize this is not the right place for general questions, but since this specific thing was brought up here, this is what I set up to test mouse clicks on touch blocks:

Mouse clicks don't seem to do anything in the Flash player game test window (or in a web browser), but if I change the touch blocks to mouse click blocks they do work.  This is using the 1.4.0p2 preview.

Try doing those in the "always" block instead (just test and see if that's the issue).

I couldn't use text drawing boxs in the always section so I changed to use a variable instead, and drawing the value of that variable in the drawing section.  Yes, that works.  Both touched and touched self blocks can be used in the always section, but not in the drawing section.

As a side note, if the block editor supported a draggable select rectangle so multiple blocks could be moved around that would be amazing.  ;)

Sorry to pester, but I had one more quick question about the contest and StencylWorks in general.  Are StencylWorks games (and for that matter, contest games) allowed to use code, behaviors, graphics, etc. from example games?  For instance, if I were to make an RPG using the general dialog text system from the RPG example, would I be able to submit that in the contest and public it to iOS, or are there restrictions on the examples?

Thanks!

You're allowed to use those, but bear in mind that if you use the example game graphics, that can make a game look less original since we see those graphics every day.

Hey guys - the deadline is coming up.

I'm going to accept games that haven't been tested on iOS, for those who have no ability to test on iOS because you don't have a device or don't have an Apple Developer License (a requirement to even test using our Lite builder in StencylWorks 1.4).

If your game doesn't run in iOS, it should run flawlessly in Flash, and we will grade it the same way as I would other apps. Obviously, the iOS folks have a slight leg up here, but it's far from a guaranteed win for them.

As a reminder, submit the games to istencyl [at] stencyl [dot] com - I would like the actual project file - not the compiled SWF or the Xcode project. This way, I can test on both Flash and iOS.

The only exception is if you've got the game on the App Store - then just a link to your App Store entry works for me. Thanks!

How many of you (who haven't yet submitted) are intending to submit an entry? I'd like to get an idea of the number of entries to expect, so I can plan accordingly.
