Sprite making software?

Hi! As the subject indicates, I need a easy to use and user friendly free sprite making software. I started using Stencyl recently and the only problem I'm facing(for now) is the lack of a decent sprite software. A software like MS Paint would be perfect. I tried using paint, but you can't make transparent backgrounds.

Inkscape is a good vector software. There's Gimp for raster. You can also download an older version of Adobe Creative Suite for free (CS2) http://www.adobe.com/uk/downloads/other-downloads.html

I tend to use GIMP to make sprites. I tend to add more details with another layer like working with an actual drawing.

Good pixel-art focuses on technique than software used, as you can make amazing pixel art even on MS Paint.

You can have transparent backgrounds if you use File > Export as > PNG
