Making Monkeys - Sponsored by Armor Games

awhhh you guys :) Thanks for the feature Jon and cheers to everyone for digging the game! Dan (armorgames) is great, very fast to reply, almost no paperwork, instant payment and no ridiculous requests such as sponsor logo on gameplay *shudders*, he is also nice guy to talk and work with. The guy who provided the music is also a legend, he did not even want payment (tho he is getting it) and he is really passionate about his music.

You're right the monkeys look like toast... my sister said that in playtesting so i tried to write it into the level text of the game like i meant it haha, i didnt want to draw tails on them as it breaks up the silhouette and the readability of the shapes, i get really OCD about that kinda thing.. im glad some people like the mechanics, i make my games mechanics first kind of thing, like i prototyped the gameplay with crappy art and when it was a fun thing to play with, then from that i spent a long time polishing and making it an experience rather than a 2min demo of launching boxes around.

The gun just duplicates the player actor in front of the gun and applies force. If a monkey hits spikes he gets deleted and an actor "dead monkey" is spawned in his place. If a monkey is near the gun (x/y is similar to x/y of gun) then spacebar designates him "the gun holder" and the gun follows his x/y and rotates toward mouse. Spacebar unattaches the gun from him and applies force, it's as simple as that.

Great job and congrats. As Rhys pointed out, idea and execution is the key.

It's also great to see stencyl games made strides in all these major game portals lately.

I really like the idea of that game (and the game itself, of course). I hate to get off track here, but I have to ; I'm pretty sure I heard that song in "Fight Night Round 3" a boxing game, am I right?

The article Ethan mentions is one of the big reasons I started looking into Flash games development as a hobby in the first place. At the time, I'd wanted to start working on games but didn't know where to start. If not for that article, I probably would have found some C++ engine instead of Flixel (which lead to Stencyl).

I'm sorry but according to his blog this game was made in Unity. Did he change engines after his sponsorship?

Nope, this was made in Stencyl. He did say, though, that in the future he was planning on making a unity 3D game.

And also, on the bottom of that page, in comments, he responded to someone saying he made the game in stencyl. And also, if it were made in unity, why would this post be here, and if it was a mistake, why wouldn't he have said so in his post here? :P

Also, if you press the 0, -, or + keys you can see the Flixel volume settings pop up.

I've been communicating with Greg about this game for a few months now. I wouldn't ever try to guess a game out of the blue like this. ;)

If you're wondering why there's no splash or badge - it's because he purchased a license to have it removed.

I found a easier way to complete 'temple timing' level!
just go blocking the left cloud.
jump down.
open the outer lock.
go near the inner lock-wall.
shoot the monkey trought the wall.
get the cafè.

It needs some hints about shooting monkeys IN platforms in level4.

The level 'Clouds' was the one i spent more time because requires quite good timing, and a little more time you keep the finger on the key, you get to press R.

The monkey animations are very funny!

I also started a game with a cloner gun (in mine you can actually clone anything though), but this is just... better.

I have to give up because I need some sleep and some of the last levels were pretty hard, but the puzzles were great.

And the soundtrack, I love it!

This game was great fun and is a great showcase of what can be created using Stencyl. I too hope to create a game someday. :)

I agree with another poster when they said that the monkeys looked more like toast rather than monkeys lol
